Akayu Onsen Gotenmori

Akayu Onsen Gotenmori ★★★

📍 989 Akayu, Nanyo

"As you would expect from an inn that originated as a bathhouse that was used by the great feudal lord Uesugi family for generations, the large stone baths for both men and women (which are changed in the morning and evening) are wonderful, and there are a total of 11 baths (including saunas). The spring water is a highly acidic sulfurous water, but the smell is not too strong. It was snowing this time, so we were able to enjoy the open-air bath with a view of the snow. The food was Japanese, mainly Yamagata beef, and for breakfast we had grilled fish, and the local potato soup was delicious and plentiful. There is also a reference room for the Uesugi family, and a service where you can freely use helmets, battle coats, swords, and spears for photos to take selfies. There was no problem with the hospitality. This time we stayed in the largest of the two rooms, which was spacious enough for four adults, and we were happy to see that it was equipped with a free full-body massage machine."

"My name is Gabriel from Sydney Australia. My wife Ellie and I stayed at Takinami for 2 nights in April 2025. We were so impressed with the high standard of everything including their warm welcome from the beginning and professional hospitality during our stay. The rooms were amazing - so clean with adequate facilities. The meals were also incredible - both in presentation and more so the fact that they use local ingredients as much as possible. This sounds like an exaggerated review - Too good to be true ? Seeing is believing and experiencing was rewarding. Thanks to all at Takinami Gabriel"

Tansen Hotel ★★★

"Although it's old, it was carefully cleaned and comfortable. It had the feel of a traditional inn, with rooms that didn't have automatic locks and required guests to leave their keys at the front desk when going out. A kettle, tea set, and cold water were provided in the room. The convenience store closes around 7 p.m., so if you'd like to have a drink, I recommend buying some alcohol and snacks in advance and bringing them to your room, or heading out to a nearby izakaya (it was delicious). I booked a room with a hot spring bath, so I was excited to have hot spring water in the bathroom as well. The hot springs in the large public bath are alternated between men's and women's in the morning and evening, so it was nice to be able to see both. Only one of the open-air baths offers a view of the beautiful garden. The other, while open-air, is covered by a roof and fence, so you can't enjoy the view. Breakfast included four types of all-you-can-eat rice cakes, which were freshly pounded, chewy, and delicious. Overall, I was very satisfied with the price. I'd like to return."

"First night of Yamagata trip. The navigation guide led us to an apple orchard. It's like an inn for fishing customers in a somewhat surprising location. Dogs are welcome, and the guest rooms are separated into separate buildings. I thought it was a bit of an unusual structure. Although fishing from the room was not possible, up to 3 rainbow trout per person was included in the accommodation fee. The fish you catch will be grilled with salt and eaten. The plan was 13,000 yen/person, but the meal was similar to the menu at our sister hotel, Akayu Onsen Ryokan Yamatoya, so it was a pretty fancy meal, and I think the taste and quantity were not bad. The bath in the guest room is not a hot spring, so you will need to travel by car, but you can use Yamatoya's large public bath for free. What was disappointing was that the only dog goods available were poop bags, but we paid 2,000 yen to use them, and although there was a dog run, the management was poor. Although it wasn't for the purpose of fishing, it was fun to experience fishing."

Akayu Onsen Gotenmori ★★★
"Superb! The facilities are excellent, service is great, and the location is very convenient. The hot spring is incredibly relaxing. I didn't expect a hot spring hotel not located in the mountains to be this good. The food quality is also good, and very filling. The only downside is that they keep your shoes in the lobby, so you have to ask them to retrieve them every time you go in or out. It's best not to go in and out too frequently."

Yamagata the Takinami ★★★
"When you go to Japan, you must stay at a ryokan and if you can only go to 1 ryokan, go to Takinami. The service could not be more thoughtful and kind. Thank you especially to Mr. Suto for his help. The food is absolutely delicious. And I appreciate the chef’s ability to accommodate a celiac in our family who needs to be gluten free. The beds were very comfortable and the private onsen is wonderful. There are interesting things to do on the property and nearby. It is an easy 3 hr bullet train ride from Tokyo. It is a memorable experience. Everything is 10 star. Don’t miss it."

"The food was delicious. The bath was also very comfortable. I'd like to go back again. The landlady was also a very nice person. Also, the entire building was decorated with paintings, bronze statues, and other things, making it a wonderful inn."

"This is an affordable hot spring inn. The hot spring is apparently a free-flowing spring, so although the water is quite hot, you can still enjoy a truly authentic hot spring. We stayed at a fairly reasonable price, and both dinner and breakfast were satisfactory in terms of both quality and quantity. The building is a bit old, but thanks to the reasonable price and the warm service of the staff, we didn't mind at all."

"I saw this inn on a TV program before and wanted to stay there sometime. I was traveling to Yamagata, and I was having trouble finding a place to stay because I would be bringing a cat and a dog with me, but I found out that Chojayashiki also accepted cats, so I decided to stay at Chojayashiki right away. . When I stayed there, the room was clean and there wasn't a single insect, so I was able to spend a comfortable time there. I used the built-in bath, and it was clean and there were about 1 to 2 steps so I could sit and take a bath, and it felt like a hot spring. For dinner, we were served 8 to 10 dishes, all of which were delicious, and I was surprised by the way they were cut and how the ingredients were used. The seasoning was a combination of Japanese and Western flavors, making it fun and delicious every time I ate it. I would like everyone to experience it for themselves."
