"This hotel would have received top marks had it not been for the breakfast. Beds comfortable, rooms lovely and clean, pool and pool area a delight - and you hear very little noise of the city so it is peaceful to sit up on the roof, and for a small hotel the pool was a reasonable size too. Perfect location for the town. Yes the road it is in is a little run down but we did not feel unsafe walking back to the hotel at night as others have mentioned (no different from London really - but it may feel a little intimidating if you are from a small town or rural area and not used to run down areas). As with all of Colombia though we did keep our wits about us where ever we were (also not different to London either) The only disappointment was the breakfast. Very limited. Nothing was self service - not even fruit or cereal - if you ordered fruit you got what they put in the bowl - like it or not. The fruit was also no where near as nice as our previous 4 hotels further south. The cereals tasted a bit stale - and again they put it in your bowl so you could not choose the quantity or mix it. My daughters are vegetarian and vegan so for them the breakfast was even worse. To be fair they really did try to see if they could help with the vege/vegan issue but it still was not nice despite their aims and efforts to please - and we did appreciate this effort. You could not fault them for trying to give you the best experience during the stay. You also have to rely on google translate to order as the waitresses do not speak English - but that is not a criticism, only mentioned this as helpful information for any one who does not speak Spanish. After 2 days though we just decided it was not big deal and went out for breakfast for the final 2 days of our stay as we were so close to town anyway - just 5 minute walk. Despite the breakfast I would certainly recommend this hotel as I could not fault anything else and would still return if I ever went back to Santa Marta as you can get food just around the corner."

"Placitas Viejas is a total gem! Stop your search and book directly with the hotel right now. When I first arrived, as a woman traveling solo, I was greeted warmly by Eliana & Mario. Both were very helpful to me during my entire journey. I stayed in the Cafe’ Junior suite. The room was on the third floor. If you are worried about luggage, there is an elevator. Upon arrival, Mario brought me to my room and shortly after delivered a cold drink to me. The breakfast is delicious & I had the option to get a traditional Colombian breakfast, which I did. Fresh fruit & juice served daily with the meal. Courtyard was magical and the pool was an oasis! The staff were all kind and greeted me by name. Plenty of restaurants in the area. The hotel is locked and staffed 24/7 & I felt incredibly safe. I can’t say enough good things about my experience! One tip is that your taxi cannot pull directly up to the hotel and so you will have a short walk to get to the hotel if dropped off by a taxi. Also, there is fun vibrant music that plays in the park until after midnight. I could hear the sounds from the room I was in, but my guess is some of the rooms may be quieter, but by no means a deal breaker, but something to be aware of if noise is a concern to you."

"Quirky hotel with a lovely 2nd floor pool and breakfast area. Initial thoughts weren't good but changed opinion as the time spent there went on. Lovely staff at breakfast and when requesting towels for the pool. Room was on ground floor and really noisy when the nightclub opposite opened but not the hotels fault. Pool is small but welcome if you just want to cool off for a while"

"I arrived after a long and tiring trip, eager to relax. My reservation was made and paid for, including taxes and breakfast... but unfortunately, the hotel, without providing the necessary information, said that since we didn't book through them, we had to pay the VAT again and that breakfast wasn't included. They refused to take responsibility and refused to refund our money. If you don't want a bad experience on your vacation, I absolutely do not recommend staying at this hotel, starting with the poor treatment from the receptionists and a manager. 0/10"
