Amazing
DDunwoWow!
An amazing little Ryoukan in a lovely town with fantastic owners.
This ryoukan is a traditional old fashioned style with a lovely private onsen in pictures
The room was large and your right on top of one of the 9 onsens.
As a ryoukan in the town you will have access to the 9 healing onsens which you can use at your leisure and complete the denyouko towel for blessings
The onsen is run by a lovely lady who is really friendly.
Typical Amenities included plus free yukata and geta to borrow whilst your walking between hot springs plus free cold milk which is just heavenly after a hot soak. Honestly the cold milk really made my day!! 🥰
Air conditioning was very effective considering the size of the room and the breakfast was too much to finish and offered a taste of everything
Lastly you are on top of the onsens as soon as you step out and monkey park is a 25 minute walk north but talk with the Owner, she has a link to the Monkey security cameras so can tell you ahead of time if theres any up there to see currently (i went during Estrus season so no monkeys for me)
When it came to checkout the lady gave me a small bento of Onigiri and Pastries and even drove me down to the local station
10/10 would stay again
GGuest UserThis is a traditional Japanese ryokan, and the room was very clean. They have separate private onsen baths for men and women on the top floor, as well as private family baths. The meals were abundant, and they even prepared our futons for us at night. The service was a major highlight: the elderly gentleman from the ryokan drove us to the station, and after we got on the bus, the lady from the ryokan kept waving goodbye and bowing. She continued to wave until the bus crossed to the other side of the river. I looked back, and she was still waving, then bowed again as the bus reached the other bank. I was truly amazed! Overall, I highly recommend this place.
GGuest UserThe onsen was comfortable, especially the outdoor onsen, which was magical during the snow. The tatami bed was also very comfortable, ensuring a good night's sleep. Additionally, the shuttle bus service to the train station was helpful, particularly on snowy days. Overall, it was a delightful stay!
GGuest UserThis hotel delivers everything you want from a family holiday. Although it is situated away from the centre of the village, we found this to be an advantage for our family, preferring a quiet location. Only 5 mins walk to the Chuo main terminal, where you can catch the free local shuttle bus to the ski fields. Getting to the hotel from Iiyama station was also easy via Nagaden Bus No.9 from bus stop 2, which drops you off right outside the hotel (last stop). We had breakfast and dinner included. Dinner was exceptional with a different Japanese 10-course menu every night. We also added the optional extras which had horse meat one night, and A5 wagyu on other nights. Onsite onsen was great after a full day's worth of skiing. We also found the hotel staff extremely helpful and friendly, and Yumi was on hand to help with any odd requests. Thank you to the whole team for an unforgettable holiday experience!
GGuest UserAmazing Stay at Hotel Iwasuge – A Hidden Gem for Ski & Onsen Lovers!
We had an incredible stay at Hotel Iwasuge, which truly became the highlight of our trip. While the interior may be a bit dated, the five-star service and exceptional food more than made up for it. We stayed for two nights on a half-board plan, and every meal was different, delicious, and thoughtfully prepared. The hospitality was outstanding—every staff member was incredibly helpful and made us feel right at home.
The location is perfect for skiing, with ski-in, ski-out access. There are two lifts right next to the hotel—one going up and one going down. The slopes nearby offer a mix of red and green tracks, making them ideal for beginners and families. Our kids especially loved the wide, easy slopes. We also rented ski equipment directly from the hotel (though helmets were not included).
After a long day on the slopes, the Hoppo Onsen was the perfect way to relax. The onsen itself is so good that we noticed some visitors coming just for the hot spring experience!
We have stayed in many four- and five-star hotels, and Hotel Iwasuge is truly one of the best. It may not be as widely known, but it absolutely deserves more recognition. We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic ski, onsen, and gourmet experience in Shiga Kogen. We can’t wait to return!
Ppuisan fongThis ryokan is the furthest from Main Street. But I love the hospitality from the owner and the authenticity of this place. There is a private onsen available in the ryokan, just need to pre register. They provide access to shibu onsen as well.
Recommended to book your dinner with them. Restaurants in shibu onsen either close very early or not open regularly. We missed our dinner, but the owner is kind enough to prepare a simple oyakudon for us.
Though this place is at the beginning of forest trail to snow monkey park. But it is close during winter. Just take note.
OO.K. MACSince it was cheaper than other ryokans in the area, I didn’t expect much.
But to my surprise, it offered full service—just like the more expensive ryokans I’ve stayed at before!
They even provided a pickup service from the train station, which I forgot to book. Luckily, a Western couple sitting next to me on the train had reserved it. When I saw the “Hotel Housei” sign on the van outside the station, I hopped in!
The hotel is a bit far from the station and involves walking up and down hills, so carrying luggage all the way would have been quite tough. I was really fortunate to catch that ride!
Cherry blossoms were in full bloom along the river, just a few steps from the hotel—such a beautiful sight.
The room wasn’t large, but it had enough space and was very comfortable.
The elderly gentleman at the front desk seemed to speak multiple languages—he even knew some Thai! He was incredibly friendly and welcoming.
The onsen was wonderful. The indoor bath was a bit too hot for me, but the outdoor bath was cooler and more relaxing.
Breakfast was a buffet, which was decent.
In conclusion, this place was absolutely worth it.
Next time, if I go skiing in Shiga Kogen or bring someone to see the snow monkeys, I’ll definitely remember to book the pick-up and drop-off service in advance!
GGuest UserLocated just within 3min from Yudanaka station, Raki Onsenryokan is run by a Chinese family. As a quiet town on its own, no one was tending to the reception when I arrived, after ringing the bell, a lady came down to help with the check in - very straightforward. I believe the family stays in the same building as they said if we ever needed anything, we could just ring the bell at the reception. Obviously I had booked a room too big for a solo traveller as this was the only room left as ”non-smoking”. Toilet and sink are at two different parts of the room which was a little inconvenient. Ryokan offers free drive (15min) TO snow monkey park, but not return, so please cater at least 35min to walk from park exit to the bus stop. Ryokan also provided a hearty breakfast, overall for the price paid it was a decent stay!
GGuest UserThe reality exceeded my expectations; the hotel was even better than I imagined. The room was very comfortable for a family with a small child! There's a private hot spring for families available by reservation, though the usage time is a bit short, it's still great overall! The food is high-quality, delicious, and varied. It's also possible to extend your stay for 1000 yen per hour, which is super convenient when traveling with a child. The hotel corridors aren't perfectly clean due to age, but the room itself is clean and pleasant.
GGuest UserWe really enjoyed our stay at Shiga Kogen Sunvalley hotel. It's only a 20 mins bus ride from the Snow Monkey Park. The bus stop (S15) is about 100m away but when it's heavily snowing, it could be a little difficult to pull your luggage across the road. During the winter season, there's a free shuttle bus that takes you around the different resorts. The hotel also has ski rentals and the pricing is very reasonable and convenient for hotel guests to pickup and drop-off. The onsite onsen and sauna is clean and well maintained. We had breakfast included - food selection is good with a mix of Western and Japanese cuisine. Dinner required reservation and you have a choice of Japanese set course, or a casual course. Usui and the team really know how to provide great hospitality and we really enjoyed our stay.
