Comfort Hotel Kii Tanabe
"Very close to the train station. Room is not big but is good for value. Breakfast is not bad"
KAMENOI HOTEL KUMANO TANABE
"This is a somewhat old Japanese-style hotel, not quite worthy of a 4-star rating. It seems there are only public baths, no private ones. They don't offer luggage storage for multiple days. They told me to use the coin locker at the station, but that only allows for 7 days, and it only accepts coins."
Hotel Kii Tanabe
"comfortable"
Sansuikan Kawayu Midoriya
"After we checked in, we were headed to Fushimi Inari Taisha and had just missed the bus. To our surprise, the hotel arranged a shuttle bus to take us there, which was incredibly thoughtful. The hotel has just been renovated, so it's very clean. The food is also exquisite. This is definitely a perfect hotel I'd highly recommend."
J-Hoppers Kumano Yunomine Guesthouse
"I arrived at the guesthouse quite late, and they arranged two lower bunks for me. The atmosphere was very cozy, and the fellow hikers were friendly and chatty."
SEN.RETREAT CHIKATSUYU
"I was about to give bad reviews due to some poor check-in experience, but everything after check in is so good that compensates this journey. First, the check-in process that brings me with bad experience: it is self-served and there is no any staff. By rights you should receive an instruction email with check-in PIN in advance, which I heard from other guests. However, I didn’t receive anything but Trip’s confirmation letter and I was unable to check in. And my sim card in Japan is just an internet card unable to make phone calls, which means I have no way to contact the hotel directly. My partner and I were desperately locked out of the hotel in the evening, after 7h hiking, with no other available hotel in the mountain. After waiting for over 1 hour, other guests helped us to enter the admin room where there is an ipad to call the hotel (why not make it available to guests without checking in?), and with the help of Trip’s agency, we finally checked in successfully. Then here is the staying experience: so good that makes me almost forgive the poor check-in experience. Each room is a spacious individual house and ours has a garden for BBQ. The food is also self-served, with the cooking stuffs and ingredients in the fridge. It was unexpected that you need to cook yourself (I don’t think it was listed on room info when I booked it), but it’s not bad that Wagyu, chicken, and vegetables are served. The rooms are big and cozy, and you can do the laundry after hiking. Everything is good about the hotel itself, just be aware of the self-checkin process and make sure you get the instructions before that."
Tanabe Station Hotel
"The location is still very good, but the room is too small... The space planning is very compact, and everything is included. The price is indeed cheap, so the overall cost-effectiveness is very high. It is a good choice for people like us who only stay for one night and leave. The scenery on the Kumano Kodo is so beautiful"
SEN.RETREAT HONGU - Kumano Kodo Gateway
"The room was very clean and comfortable. Dinner and breakfast were provided, but it would have been even better if the time they were left was indicated."
Kawayu Onsen Fujiya
"Lovely onsen , dinner & breakfast . That’s an opposite river bath. Very convenient."

Kumano Ayukawa-juku
"Very kind boss, specializing in driving, and took me to delicious family cuisine at night. There is Lawson near the hotel. The room I lived in was large and comfortable. I drove me to Kumano Ancient Road Museum the next morning. It is recommended to live here."
Watarase Onsen Hotel Yamayuri
"From the Kumano Kodo, walk to Hatshinmon Prince and take a bus to the hotel. The ride takes about 40 minutes. Remember to check the bus timetable before hiking. The last bus down the mountain is at 4:30. The room size is very good, and the price is not expensive for a room with two meals. There is a single bathing pool, but the water temperature is not very hot. The location of the hotel is quite remote. Remember to book dinner and breakfast. There is no place to eat around except the large bathing area. You can book a free bus to Hongu Taisha or Fashinmon Prince on the next day."
Ashita No Mori
"I am very satisfied. The bus stop is 40 meters from the door and opposite is Sennin Hot Spring. I stayed for two days, one day for indoor bathing and one day for outdoor hot spring bathing. It was sunny one day and snowed one day. The scenery was everywhere."
SEN.RETREAT TAKIJIRI
"This is the best hotel in Kumano; the 15-minute walk to the starting point is absolutely worth it. The hotel combines Japanese traditions with modern technology! It's exactly what you'd expect from Japan."
Sansuikan Kawayu Matsuya
"Great Location with ample comfy room. At such price even free the onsen come at a surprise. It would be better only if the self check in experience can be improved with a more responsive machine interface."
Shimogoten
"After soaking in the hot spring, my skin is very smooth and the scenery of the hot spring is beautiful. Since it is located deep in the mountains, there are many small flying insects at night."
Ryujin Onsen Marui Ryokan
"Service attitude is very good, food quality is high! The house is big! The hot spring is by the river, and the underground tunnel is a bit special."
Ryokan Bijintei
"It was a retro inn, located a little way from the Motoyu hot springs of Ryujin Onsen, and it didn't even have an elevator. 🤗 Even though I couldn't stay alone at Kamigoten or other places, they warmly welcomed me as a solo traveler. 😌💓 The hostess is originally from Sajima, Kamijima Town, Ehime Prefecture, where I live, and she has friends on Iwaki Island, where I also live. Perhaps because it was a weekday, the place was all to myself. 🤗 They prepared a bath and meal just for me, which was such a luxurious and appreciated experience. 😊 Afterwards, I was able to visit the Kumano Sanzan shrines in a pleasant atmosphere. Thank you so much. 🤗"
Hotel Nankairo
"It was very nice because it was near the station and it was beautiful ☺️"
Kirari-Ryujin
"We received a friendly welcome and were given a spacious room. The property is beautifully situated and clean, but practically requires a car. Dinner and breakfast are a generous buffet with something for everyone."
Kirinosato Takahara
"What an experience. Tapas and Spanish music by our japanese host. Food was 'subarashi' and the beds and pillows soft and comfortable. I loved the rooftop bar. I would highly rate this establishment. "
Watarase Onsen Hotel Sasayuri
"This is one of the onsen hotels of the same group in Watarase onsen - used to be one of three, now it’s one of two since they closed the third one. Sasayuri is the nicer one and it’s a classic onsen hotel with large rooms and the usual public bath amenities. You have to call the hotel in advance to book the free shuttle pick up (15 min away) from Hongu Taisha mae bus stop which is convenient for those walking the Kumano Kodo and/touring the Hongu Taisha. Excellent service from reception staff to restaurant staff to driver. We organised luggage shuttle delivery (another company called Torii) and the hotel reception were great in making sure our bag was rightly labelled. They also helped us with getting small change for our bus fare. Food was good - not outstanding if I’m being picky as compared to other onsen hotels; but plentiful and delicious. The only area of improvement for dinner serving staff to serve up the dishes in a better order - eg let us finish the sashimi first before serving the hot dishes. The hotel has a public indoor bath. For outdoor onsen baths you can use the ones in the neighbouring (same chain) hotel which is a short 5 min walk via a connecting suspension footbridge. Rooms are very spacious, slightly dated but that’s the vibe of most onsen hotels in Japan anyway. Free coffee in the lobby. WiFi was good. Overall great location to stay for those doing the Kumano Kodo hike. I would give this a 3.5 out of 5, but TripAdvisor doesn’t allow half points."
Yunominesou
"Very oold.school hotel but really appreciate the hotel service. The staff is so nice and the good the great."
Mirai Noen
"This was a long time ago, but... it was the worst lodging I've ever stayed at in my life. There was no hygiene at all. I hope they improve it for future guests. There is a separate accommodation building, the master's house, and a detached room. Opposite the main house is a detached room! It feels like a storage shed💦 The entrance is through the farmhouse storehouse. There was food left over from the previous guest, even in the fridge! 20,000 yen a night (New Year's rate) is just too bad! The room in the main house may be comfortable, but the detached room is definitely not worth the fee. I was dying to go home..."
Ryokan Sakai
"The accommodation fee was expressed as 、 confusing. ¥ 9,800 〜 Discount if you pay in cash on site. It was different when I went to the site."
Nouka Minpaku Mirainouen
"The room was very clean. The landlady was kind and could communicate in Chinese using a translation software. I ordered her breakfast for 800 yen and it was very comfortable. I didn’t know what to choose from the meal. I just ate what she made and I was very satisfied. This B&B can pick you up from the station. I don’t speak Japanese, so I can only walk there. When I left, she drove me to the station. I liked it very much! The bus runs twice a day, and it’s difficult to take a taxi. The pick-up and drop-off is very pleasant."
