Guest UserTraveling with a child during the holidays, we chose this hotel. Even before checking in, we received a WeChat message from the concierge with a comprehensive mini-guide, which was really helpful. The hotel itself is excellent; it's very quiet, perfect for sleeping. They provide kids' toiletries, all in single-use packets, so you don't need to bring your own, and they're very safe. On the second floor, there were some fun activities for children over the past two days, like Yellow River-themed painting, which my child absolutely loved and found very engaging. The hotel breakfast is also great, featuring local specialties like 'Haozi noodles,' and it runs until 11 AM, so no need to rush in the morning. In the evenings, on the third floor, they offer complimentary fruit and congee. If I didn't feel like going out, I could just take my child there for some congee and fruit. Overall, the stay was fantastic, and I highly recommend this hotel.

Stayed for two nights and tried two different room types: a log cabin and a lotus tent. The housekeeper's service is very good. He replies to WeChat messages and answers phone calls immediately at any time. It makes tourists who are not familiar with camping projects feel very reassured. The breakfast is very rich. During holidays, it is recommended to go there just after the meal starts, when there are fewer people and you can enjoy the special food slowly. The desert project package can be purchased directly at the registration desk, which is very convenient. The sandboard can be used for free and unlimited sliding. We stayed in Dongge Camp for a whole day. The next day, the housekeeper helped us contact Master Wang to charter a car to visit several popular attractions in Zhongwei. The half-day tour was not too fast or too slow, and the experience was very good. Recommended to all friends who want to camp in the desert and charter a car

Guest UserI stayed in an air-conditioned cabin without a private bathroom this time. It was cleaner than I expected. I'd recommend bringing a pair of flip-flops for the shared showers. Other amenities like toothbrushes and towels were disposable, which was great. Getting a taxi was difficult, but the host was incredibly thoughtful and came to pick us up. There was a bonfire party in the evening, and they set off fireworks like there was no tomorrow! Watching the stars and fireworks in the desert was absolutely beautiful!

Everything was excellent, and the service was exceptionally satisfactory. The public breakfast restaurant was particularly comfortable and the service was personalized. The only drawback was the lack of fast charging in the entire parking lot, with only three slow charging stations. Many electric vehicle models couldn't be charged there and had to be driven 8 kilometers to the township power supply station to charge.

Posted on Aug 23, 2026|Desert Horizon 180° Sand View Family Room (Private Air Conditioning + Private Bathroom + Terrace)
Guest UserThe biggest surprise of my trip to Zhongwei was staying at the Xiang Tengger Desert Hotel. Deep in the Tengger Desert, far from the hustle and bustle, the dedicated shuttle service made check-in hassle-free, saving us the trouble of driving into the sand ourselves. The rooms were clean and dry, which is quite rare for a desert environment, and the facilities exceeded our expectations. During the day, we enjoyed playing on the sand dunes, with plenty of activities like sandboarding and other desert adventures that kept the kids entertained. In the evening, we waited for the stunning desert sunset, and after dark, there was a bonfire party and fireworks. Looking up, we could see the brilliant Milky Way – the atmosphere was absolutely incredible. The staff were warm and attentive, quickly resolving any issues we had. Overall, it perfectly blended wilderness adventure with comfort, making it ideal for a family trip. If I ever return to the Zhongwei desert, I'll definitely stay here again.

Guest UserI managed to snag a classic twin room last minute, and it turned out to be perfectly spacious for one adult and one child. The room was large, and the cleanliness was impressive. The butler service was very responsive, and the laundry service was a standout – my clothes were washed and dried within three hours, returned warm and fragrant. The only downsides were that both breakfast and dinner at the buffet restaurant were mediocre, and the hotel prices in general were quite high.
We tried the hotel's surfing car, off-road vehicle, and self-drive desert go-karts. We rode the surfing car three times, and one round cost over a thousand yuan, which is even more expensive than Disneyland! However, I still highly recommend the hotel's surfing car; it actually offered decent value and was much more fun than the one at Shapotou. We also tried the hotel's spa, but I felt the price was a bit inflated – 1880 yuan wasn't significantly better than what you'd get for a few hundred yuan elsewhere. Also, the sand play area wasn't as good as at the Starry Sky Hotel; for kids who want to slide on the sand, I'd recommend the Starry Sky Hotel instead. Overall, though, I was very satisfied and would consider a second visit if I have the chance.

Guest UserThis self-guided desert tour is absolutely amazing! The desert scenery is majestic and magnificent, and the afterglow of the setting sun shines on the golden sand dunes, as beautiful as a painting. The campsite facilities are complete and the staff are warm and caring. The food is diverse, the roasted whole lamb is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and the aroma is overflowing. Camel riding, sand boarding and other activities are super exciting. Moreover, the self-guided itinerary is free and allows you to deeply experience the charm of the desert. Highly recommended, looking forward to coming again next time!

LeCarpI stayed at Hotel S Tent the day before and then Hotel Desert Star the next day. Staying at both consecutively, the contrast was quite noticeable.
Let's start with Desert Star. The room conditions were indeed better than Hotel S Tent, especially the water supply, which was more comfortable, and the dining was slightly better too. However, since it's in the desert, one shouldn't have too high expectations for food anyway.
What really affected the experience were the activities. Desert Star clearly has more guests, so many activities felt like an 'assembly line'. For example, during the morning 'find plants and animals' and 'collecting' activities, no tools were provided for collecting. In the end, if you didn't buy the rather inconvenient photo frame, the collected items were just put into a plastic bag, and that counted as completing an activity 🥲. The actual experience was quite different from what I had imagined.
The stargazing at night was not something we participated in, as it was cloudy during our two days in Zhongwei, so I won't comment on that part.
Another noticeable difference was service efficiency. For internal shuttle services, I felt Hotel S Tent was more prompt, probably because it has fewer guests. Also, for walking to other places to play or eat, Hotel S Tent's location is more convenient and closer.
In terms of price, Desert Star is roughly 3-4 times the price of Hotel S Tent. Considering the rooms, dining, activities, transportation, and overall experience, I personally don't feel that this price difference brought a proportional increase in the experience.
So, if I come to Zhongwei again, I will most likely stick with Hotel S Tent. (I don't mind the wind noise too much)

We came to Zhongwei only to visit Shapotou desert park. This hotel is not at the center of the district and you need to walk or take a taxi to get there but I recommend here to all who like a relax/green atmosphere. The hotel buildings sit in a big garden. We stayed on the second floor and there's a lift. The breakfast was great, a lot to choose both savory and sweet. The staff was helpful and polite. They gave us medicine footbath on the first day we arrived.

Guest UserI absolutely loved this place! I’m writing this as a foreigner who went with 4 other foreigners for a special birthday weekend. First, the service. We have good Chinese proficiency, but those with limited to none will be fine. Most of the communication and coordination is handled via WeChat - which can auto translate. 东 “Dong” was our main contact. He rocked and gave us a real experience. He shuttled us in the sand jeep, gifted me a cake for my birthday, and was just an overall cool guy. Thanks! Second, the location and accommodations. If you stay near Desert Star, there’s a lot of people and campsites - that area seems like a bit of a tourist funnel. This area is located in the REAL sand dunes area. Further North, you actually cross into Inner Mongolia. The separation and distance is worth it. Makes for brighter stars and a more authentic experience. Third, the food. They were able to coordinate a whole lamb to be roasted for my birthday. It was absolutely extraordinary. The sides for it were some of the best I had on the entire trip - they have some skilled chefs there. This place has great reviews, and it’s worth it. I do recommend this to foreigners, and I hope I can return one day.
