CCHIN YIN MINMy wife and I traveled all the way from the UK to Sandakan for a family visit at Taman Sentosa during the CNY 2026 festive period. Sabah Hotel proved to be the perfect base for our stay; its location made it very convenient to visit relatives while still providing a relaxing, quiet retreat at the end of the day.
The hotel’s colonial charm and lush, green surroundings are beautiful. We were particularly impressed by the excellent facilities, especially the large swimming pool and the variety offered at the breakfast buffet. Despite the busy holiday season, the service was top-notch and the staff were incredibly welcoming, which made our festive stay even more special. Our room was clean and comfortable, offering the perfect place to rest after busy days of celebrations. We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Sandakan, especially for those coming from abroad to visit family nearby!
CciaociaociaoI made a last-minute decision to visit Sepilok and, with limited options, ended up booking this hotel. Overall, it's decent, but don't expect too much from the room facilities, as it was built in 2006. I recommend bringing your own slippers and toiletries, as they aren't provided proactively.
However, the hotel environment itself is quite nice. There's supposedly a good trail within the resort, but I couldn't find it anywhere – it might be a very rustic path, and I didn't dare explore further after the rain. It's also very close to the sun bear and orangutan centers, within walking distance. The hotel check-in starts at 2 PM, and the orangutan center's feeding time begins at 3 PM, but the sun bear sanctuary closes at 3:30 PM. So, if you plan to visit both attractions after checking in, I suggest heading to the sun bear sanctuary first. Alternatively, you could visit both attractions in the morning before checking into the hotel.
The hotel's night walk was pretty good; I was initially worried about safety, but it turned out to be quite easy. That said, it's still wise to bring proper gear.
AAnonymous UserThe location is great, the hotel is old, the AC is old that it's not functioning well, the bfast is so so.. but overall is OK, just don't expect too much.. my expectations is already low prior to the check in, so it's fine
JJoyce Chuahit’s very nice hotel and staff! Location good near by all convenient store! Restaurant just near by and easy for you to settle meal problem
GGuest UserWhat I liked a lot: Well situated to visit main attractions in Sepilok: Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre/Sunbear centre/Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), free shuttle bus to the main attractions (09h-14h-16) which was really great. Also offer tours at reasonable prices e.g. Mangroves & Firefly Cruise (recommended). Free water dispenser.
To note: rooms are very basic (there is airco), we had some ants in the room, bathroom is outside. Breakfast was limited and minimal.
When we were there internet was not functional, luckily we had taken local simcard before with unlimited data so for us, this was not a big issue. Before coming to the hotel, I had sent a mail to have info about tours they offered, but never received a reply therefore I had booked tours with an agency which in the end was more expensive then when I would have it booked with Paganakan Dii Tropical Retreat. Possible to book tours on the spot (no need to reserve before coming) but I did not know this in advance.
GGuest UserConvenient location, five minutes walk to the rainforest, 15 minutes to the orangutan center. There is a shared kitchen with a stove and dishes. The room is spacious, the bed linen is snow-white. There is hot water in the shower, the water pressure is not very strong. Breakfast is not great, but you will not go hungry. Prices in the cafe in the hotel and the cafe next door are the same, dishes are 18-20 ringgit per one, we did not eat so I do not know about the taste. A good place, but not wow.
IIgor BlinovThere's a small shop at the hotel, and there's hot water in the room. But I can't really rate the place highly enough—there were too many cockroaches. We slept fully dressed with the lights on. They were everywhere: in the shower, on the chairs, in the kettle, under the bed, on the windows. It's a problem in the neighborhood; there are plenty of them on the street, too.
GGuest UserGloria Swiss is located near the airport so is very convenient. We got a two room family suite which was perfect for us. The rooms were clean and nice. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
UUser500Very happy with my stay here. Older hotel but I think well managed. TV and air con both work well. Would definitely stay again.

GGuest UserBook for business trip & it's just a short stay.
For me, not the best place for vacation.
Got club nearby where the music can be loud.
