Overall, the room was good, but the lighting was a bit dim. The shower head had low water pressure (possibly due to clogged nozzles, with only some holes working), causing water to spray everywhere. Also, the TV wasn't connected to the internet and experienced freezing issues, which might have been due to the typhoon.
Everything else was perfectly fine. The service attitude was excellent, and the room had great soundproofing (I couldn't hear any outside noise at all). The bed was very comfortable, and the air conditioning was pleasant with no strange odors. The cleanliness was also very good (I didn't see any dust or foreign objects like previous guests' hair).
We stayed for two consecutive nights and requested room cleaning after the first night. When we returned, the original slippers were respectfully placed neatly near the door, and new slippers were provided. Bottled water was replenished promptly, and the towels were all new and very clean.From€78

My friend was only staying in Shanghai for a day, so naturally, I wanted to give her an itinerary that offered both 'old-world charm and new-age chic.' While passing Nanjing West Road recently, this InterContinental 'Luxury Collection' hotel immediately caught my eye. And just as I expected, critical as she is, she complimented my taste the moment she walked in.
Its most appealing features are its convenient location and its ability to be a tranquil oasis amidst the bustle: step outside, and you're on the vibrant Nanjing Road; turn around, and you're in the quiet serenity of a residential area. My friend said the elevator decor instantly made her feel like she'd 'traveled through time,' and that unique 'Haitian style' evoked long-lost memories of Shanghai. She had originally come to sightsee but happily spent most of her day lingering at the hotel.
What she loved most were the terrace and the restaurant. On a summer evening, the breeze felt just like those childhood nights spent cooling off in the alleyways – she used to live in a Shikumen house. She remarked, 'If only I could lie in a wicker chair, fan myself with a palm-leaf fan, eat watermelon, and watch an outdoor movie, that would be truly divine.' She also adored the red hanging ornament in the lobby; it was vibrantly bright, yet its glass texture gave it a lively feel, much like Shanghai's character – passionate yet steady, with a touch of lightness within its composure.
The food did not disappoint either. I pushed her to try the Shiqipu Noodle Restaurant, where the owner asked in Shanghainese, 'Mi dao ai hao fa?' (Is the taste good?), and she smiled and replied, 'Authentic,' instantly tearing up. She specifically bought the sweet variety of butterfly pastries from the International Hotel – saying 'only sweet is truly Shanghai.' Her only regret was: having stayed in too many foreign-style grand hotels, this time, with Shanghai elements everywhere and Shanghai flavors in every bite, it was 'just missing the sound of Shanghai.' Perhaps the cicada chirps in the alleyways and the hawkers' cries from the Shikumen are the hometown sounds she truly yearns to hear.
However, she has already declared: the next time she returns, this will be her chosen hotel, and she plans to visit all the routes I arranged. I believe the charm of Shanghai has never been in its superficial glamour but in its ability to always find the most fitting way to blend East and West, ancient and modern, living as a unique 'Haipai' (Shanghai style). This is also the root that every Shanghainese person cherishes.
Below are the three half-day itinerary options I created for her, which I've also compiled here, hoping they might help someone else:
Option 1 · A Stroll Through Old Shanghai Charm
Start from the hotel's main entrance on Fengyang Road and turn into Huanghe Road. The Changjiang Building and Changjiang Theater were the last residences of Eileen Chang; Huanghe Road is the origin of 'Blossoms Shanghai' (Fan Hua). The International Hotel is where her mother and aunt once stayed; next to it, the Sports Museum is rumored to be where Eileen Chang used to study. Diagonally opposite is the History Museum (formerly the Racecourse); the East Wing houses the old bronze lions from the HSBC Building on the Bund, and the 'Echoes of Shanghai' exhibition in the West Wing happens to talk about the past of Fengyang Road. The ornate windows of the West Wing and the Changjiang Building, mirroring the hotel's architecture, perfectly showcase the most fashionable Art Deco style of the 1930s.
Option 2 · Tracing Red Memories
Walk along Chengdu North Road to the Secretariat of the China Labor Movement, to see how Shanghai workers united into a revolutionary force; then visit the former site of the Songpu Special Committee. Go to the Sihang Warehouse to hear the echoes of the Battle of Shanghai and see the bullet-riddled walls recount the tragedy of that year. At night, turn into Xiang Kang Li on Xinchang Road to find the former site of the CCP Central Committee's secret printing press; on Nanjing West Road, there is also the former site of the Soviet Liaison Office, where, amidst the flickering lights, memories of the past reside.
Option 3 · Modern and Retro Collision
The LV 'Big Boat' on Nanjing West Road is currently a popular spot for photos; after visiting, turn into Wujiang Road for shopping and dining, and further ahead is Zhangyuan Shikumen – where new trends emerge in old alleyways, perfect for capturing stunning photos.

I visited Qianyun after looking at dozens of places in the area. I wanted to be away from typical city area, have a bathtub and nice outdoor area, and with easy access to Shanghai Disneyland. Qianyun met all those requirements and more! The location was immediately very serene and surrounded by forest, but still easy to access lots of waimai food delivery options. They were also very kind and proactive about sharing information about local restaurants and activities, and provide a breakfast and evening fruit every day. They offer free car transport to Disneyland, and I was excited to use this service but I ended up enjoying my time at the hotel so much that I opted to stay and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere instead! The hotel pets are so friendly - within five minutes the little cat Banban was on my lap and purring.
The room itself is decorated very nicely with all the amenities you need. The bathtub inside is very comfortable and I loved the outdoor hot spring tub as well. The attention to hygiene is very highly emphasized and I was impressed with how clean and luxurious everything felt.
I will definitely visit again and recommend to anyone hoping to have a convenient getaway from the city, or who would like to be near to Disneyland Resort while also experiencing a more peaceful area and for a good economical value and high quality service!

Since it was taken over by Jinjiang and rebranded as Kunlun, the service has seen a slight difference, though overall it still meets five-star standards. The staff are proactive in greeting guests. The main issues lie with the afternoon tea and happy hour. For afternoon tea, the Puerh tea was already dry. As for the happy hour noodles, I'm not sure what the chef was thinking – they were cooked, then cooked again, left to sit, and then cooked one more time when ordered. Do they think all guests are grandmas?
**Facilities:** My room was upgraded for free, and it was very spacious. The only drawback is that you have to step into the bathtub to use the shower, which isn't ideal, but it's understandable given the hotel's 90s foundational layout.

The location in Xintiandi is unbeatable, and there are many foreigners around.
Breakfast is served on the first floor and is available until 11 AM on weekends. The breakfast itself is truly commendable: a wide variety of fresh, delicious food, and excellent service. I would definitely return just for the breakfast.
Dolores provided great service, making check-in very fast. There's also a turndown service. When I called the front desk because my foot was chafed, they quickly sent up band-aids and alcohol swabs.
The room has a vanity table, but the smart toilet and hairdryer are a bit old-fashioned; it would be a bonus if they were updated later. The bedding is a tiny bit firm, but I still slept very comfortably. The room also has wireless charging for watches, headphones, and phones, which is very thoughtful.
The bathroom is much better than the one at the Andaz next door. Since both the bathtub and shower are within the glass door, there are no strange odors.
The gym is on B1. Although it's small, it's well-equipped with plenty of machines, showing a lot of consideration.From€153

The location is excellent, just a 10-minute walk to ZhaPu Road Bridge and Sichuan Road Bridge. The hotel was newly renovated in 2024, and the room view is fantastic. You can see the 'Three-piece Suit' buildings of Pudong, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, and the Huangpu River right through the window. The bathroom having double sinks is a great feature.
The breakfast buffet offers a rich variety of options and is well-managed. The female manager in the black suit in the restaurant was constantly attending to guests, inside and out, and even found time to help clear tables and dishes.
However, there are still some points to criticize. The trendy bar on the 32nd floor (where the bathtub used to be) has a fence that's too high, perfectly blocking the view of both banks of the Huangpu River. I remember in the past, the fence was only shoulder-height. Is this for 'safety'? I think it's unnecessary, as the Huangpu River doesn't have a 'lid' for 'safety' either.From€140

I always thought I had no particular connection with The Ritz-Carlton brand. My previous experiences in other cities were unremarkable, so I didn't have high expectations for this stay. I just wanted to experience the former glory of Shanghai Centre.
My opinion of The Portman began to shift on the plane ride over. I stumbled upon a few articles online recounting the stories of Shanghai's old five-star hotels. One particular sentence piqued my interest: ”A sign in the staff corridor of The Portman Ritz-Carlton reads: 'The best employees in all of Shanghai walk through here.'” This was intriguing, as I'd never seen a hotel so confident in its team. This sparked an added sense of anticipation for my trip.
On the day I arrived in Shanghai, I missed my train because I ate too slowly 😭😂😂. For some reason, all tickets from Hangzhou to Shanghai that day were sold out. After rushing around Hangzhou East Station for an hour, I decided to call the hotel, hoping the concierge could help. The colleague who answered immediately transferred me to the hotel concierge. I want to especially thank John from the concierge team, who continuously helped me check for train ticket options. As he said, ”People on their graduation trip often have incredible luck” – a ticket for a train departing in half an hour miraculously became available. John called me immediately upon seeing it, and at that exact moment, I received a text message confirming my successful waitlist booking, ensuring my successful arrival in Shanghai that evening. Even more heartwarming, after I boarded the train, I received a thoughtful and detailed text from him offering transportation advice to the hotel.
After a bumpy journey to Shanghai, I finally arrived at the hotel around 7 PM that evening. Fortunately, the Front Office Manager on duty, Niko, checked me in. He is undoubtedly an outstanding, dedicated, and excellent leader, truly embodying The Ritz-Carlton's operating philosophy: ”We are Ladies and Gentlemen Serving Ladies and Gentlemen” – serving like ladies and gentlemen. Upon learning of my unfortunate experience at Hangzhou East Station, he proactively offered a late check-out. After finding that the Old Jing'an guided tour was fully booked for the day, he actively helped me find various solutions so I could better explore Shanghai the next day. This was a huge help! I can't imagine how disorganised and exhausted my next day's itinerary would have been without his assistance. I must especially thank Niko for his meticulousness and care, which gave me a perfect trip to Shanghai!
That same evening, Richard from the concierge also helped me recommend nearby restaurants. Considering it was already close to 9 PM, he used his professional knowledge and familiarity with the surroundings, combining cuisine, value for money, and operating hours, to give me several optimal recommendations. He even proactively helped me inquire about bicycle rentals afterwards! I am still deeply impressed by his professionalism and approachability!
This hotel is part of Shanghai Centre. This complex, once Shanghai's largest and most luxurious commercial hub in the 90s, was designed by the master of atriums, John Portman. Its design was absolutely avant-garde back then, and even now. It’s majestic yet elegant, grand yet full of intricate details. Passing through its entrance at night feels like stepping back decades into a “grand hotel.” Such a unique atmosphere cannot be replicated by any modern hotel; it possesses an enchanting magic that makes one want to linger.
I also want to especially thank Aurora and Judy from the call center. Upon entering the room, I was greeted by the generous graduation trip amenities and beautiful flower bouquet Aurora had thoughtfully arranged for me, making me feel right at home after a tiring journey! After checking out, I received a follow-up call from Judy, during which I praised the comfort of the bedding and reported the poor internet connection. She diligently noted down my feedback and even proactively offered to add a note to my future bookings to include a down mattress topper for extra softness!
During check-out, it was a fortunate coincidence that Niko assisted me again. Remembering my previous train mishap, he even messaged me before check-out to ask if I needed help arranging a car. He also contacted the housekeeping manager on duty to address my feedback about the slow internet speed in the room. I am also very grateful that the manager proactively helped contact the hotel in Suzhou when he learned of my next destination! It is the meticulous, thoughtful, and comprehensive service of Niko, John, Richard, Aurora, and Judy that has established The Portman Ritz-Carlton as the top luxury hotel brand in Shanghai in my mind. It also left me departing with a greater affirmation of that online article: indeed, the best employees in all of Shanghai walk through here!
P.S. General Manager, if you see this review, please promote Niko quickly! Don't let such an excellent colleague be poached elsewhere. I've stayed at over 20 hotels of similar caliber this year, and I've never encountered such an outstanding colleague who truly thinks of the guests at every turn, helping wholeheartedly from the guest's perspective! For a family trip before the end of the summer holiday, we chose the 'old internet-famous' Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland, also known as the Deep Pit Hotel, for a two-day stay.
The hotel thoughtfully assigned Bruce as our butler. Not only did he arrange welcome fruits and sweet soup, but he also upgraded our room type by one level.
The hotel lived up to its reputation as a well-established property. From the moment we were greeted to check-in, the overall experience was excellent. The luggage carts even had felt covers, a level of detail I haven't seen in a long time. The room was very clean and tidy, and the bathroom was spacious. The bathmat for the tub was long-pile, while the one for the shower was terry cloth. After comparing, I realized that none of the hotels or high-end guesthouses I've stayed in these past two years made this distinction – truly, the attention to detail was perfect.
The most anticipated part of the Deep Pit Hotel is the evening light show. The drone show, synchronized with the 'Classic of Mountains and Seas' light projections, truly made the trip worthwhile. It might not be the largest in scale, but when the drones formed the Big Dipper and various light rings overhead, it definitely elicited countless 'wows.'
From the Cai Feng Lou on the top floor, the small underwater aquarium, the nearby amusement park, the night light show, to Bruce's subtle and attentive service – we truly came with high expectations and left thoroughly satisfied.From€184

The hotel's location is excellent, and cleanliness wasn't an issue.
However, the facilities had some significant drawbacks. The bathroom door was very problematic; the toilet and shower shared the same glass door, which was extremely difficult to slide and very inconvenient (as shown in the picture). There were too few power outlets, making charging devices a hassle. The light switches weren't clearly marked, and the night light shone directly into your eyes.
Regarding service, the younger male front desk staff member was rude and unprofessional. When I checked in, I wasn't the only guest, and he was impatient and impolite with everyone, not using any basic pleasantries. He also didn't inform me about any of the hotel's facilities; I had to find the laundry room myself later. At one point, a hotel call came in to the female staff member opposite him. She wasn't sure about the situation, hung up, and then asked the male staff member, who directly mocked the guest who had called for inquiries – that was completely out of line. He also made a point of pretending to be busy with other things (even though guests could see his screen and he clearly wasn't busy) before grudgingly responding to guest requests.
Although the hotel's physical amenities aren't a major issue, I will not be staying here again due to the service attitude. Being next to a university, I'm sure they won't miss one guest.From€74
