Practical Tips for Riding the Chongqing Metro

Chongqing Hongyadong

Chongqing’s mountain-city metro system differs greatly from North American transit networks. Below are practical tips for Canadian travellers to ensure a smooth riding experience:

  • Adapt to Terrain Elevation Changes: Stations feature long staircases, steep escalators and sloped passageways due to Chongqing’s hilly landscape. Travellers with luggage or limited mobility should reserve extra time for transfers.
  • Mandatory Security Checks: All metro entrances require standard security screening for passengers and luggage. Cooperate with inspections to speed up entry.
  • Handle Language Barriers: Station signs and ticket machines support English, but announcements and staff conversations are mainly in Chinese. Prepare an offline translation tool or check routes via Trip.com for easy navigation.
  • Follow Local Metro Etiquette: Queue orderly for tickets and boarding, offer seats to seniors and parents with children, and avoid loud noise or eating on board.
  • Confirm Last Train Times: Suburban lines close early. Always check final departure times in advance to avoid being stranded. Core lines offer extended hours on weekends and holidays for late-night sightseeing.

The facilities are comprehensive, including a gym and laundry room, and the staff are attentive and thoughtful. It offers incredible value for money, and I'll definitely choose Ramada for my next business trip.

We had a wonderful stay at Hilton Chongqing. The breakfast spread was great to start the day. But the real highlight was China Moon, the hotel’s Chinese restaurant. We ended up having all our dinners there during the stay, the food was simply amazing. Every dish was flavorful, well-prepared and consistently impressive. It’s rare to find a hotel restaurant you want to return to night after night but China Moon made it easy.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Mr. Ryan for his outstanding hospitality. He was warm, professional, and very 稳重—calm, composed, and dependable—which immediately made us feel welcomed and well taken care of. He thoughtfully arranged for our room to be next to our children's room and even upgraded our room to make it possible. We truly appreciated his kindness and attention to detail. What touched me even more was that after I casually mentioned it was my birthday on the day we arrived, he thoughtfully arranged a birthday cake for me. It was such a heartfelt surprise and made my birthday even more special. It was a small gesture that reflected the genuine care and exceptional service he provides. We were so comfortable during our stay that we preferred spending more time at the hotel rather than going out. Because we enjoyed our stay so much, we decided to add the breakfast package, and Mr. Ryan kindly offered us the package rate for two, which came as a wonderful surprise. This hotel has a standard of service that truly stands out. The warmth, professionalism, and genuine care shown by the staff made our family trip even more memorable. We will definitely stay here again whenever we visit Chongqing. Thank you, Mr. Ryan, for making our stay such a wonderful and unforgettable experience.

After watching 'Sweet Talk,' I decided to stay on the Executive Floor. Of course, TV shows are just TV shows; I didn't encounter an Executive Lounge manager like Xu Miyu at the JW Marriott Chongqing. However, choosing the Executive Floor was definitely the right decision. It was very convenient to enjoy breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening offerings at the 28th-floor Executive Lounge. Gloria from the Executive Lounge was also very welcoming and even checked in on my satisfaction after I had checked out. The coffee capsules and tea bags in the room were also generously stocked. The hotel's location is very convenient, with plenty of dining options nearby.

Location: Situated inside Chongqing's landmark 'Grand Sail' building, directly above Raffles City and with direct metro access. Within walking distance to Chaotianmen, Hongyadong, Jiefangbei, and the pier. There are three hotels in the 'Sail' building: InterContinental Raffles City, Hotel Indigo, and Ascott. Ascott is wholly owned by CapitaLand, the developer of Raffles City, so its quality is undoubtedly top-notch. Facilities: Positioned as a serviced apartment, the public areas are compact yet comfortable and practical. The lobby offers complimentary tea and fresh flowers. A significant portion of the public space is dedicated to guests. The gym is well-equipped with at least two treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes, as well as a full set of resistance machines. There's also a yoga room with river views, comparable to a small commercial gym. It provides hot/cold water, sanitizing wipes, towels, and even headphones with sterilized covers. The swimming pool was closed during our two-day stay, so we hope to check it out next time. Below the hotel is Raffles City's urban garden, leading directly to a river-view platform – a peaceful oasis amidst the bustle. Room: We were fortunate to be upgraded to a two-bedroom suite, so spacious it was astounding. It features two bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a bathtub in the master. It includes a washer and dryer, perfect for families. The kitchen is fully equipped with a built-in microwave, oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, and range hood. A complete set of dishes and cookware is provided. The facilities are excellently maintained; the microwave and oven looked almost unused. The room offers a pillow menu and abundant storage space. Due to its unique location, Ascott's rooms offer either unbeatable river views, stunning city views, or like ours, views of both. Service: Special thanks to Miss Genny at the front desk, who was incredibly patient during our check-in, attentively asked about our needs, and efficiently arranged our room. We arrived early, intending only to store our luggage, but to our surprise, we received our room key immediately. We are very grateful. All hotel staff were exceptionally proactive, friendly, and helpful – carrying luggage, greeting us upon sight, making us feel right at home. The staff member on the ground floor was also wonderful, assisting with getting in and out of cars/moving luggage and patiently giving directions. Overall, a very satisfying stay.

I've been to Chongqing many times, but this was my first stay at a Kempinski. I'd seen on Trip.com that the hotel opened in 2012, so I assumed the facilities and decor might be a bit outdated. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that despite being open for 14 years, this Kempinski is still exceptionally well-maintained. The original construction materials and furnishings were clearly high-quality, luxury items, so overall, aside from the slightly older design and decor style, everything else was unexpectedly good. This includes the dining options – whether it was Elements Western Restaurant, the Beer Bar, or the Executive Lounge, the food quality was impressive. The desserts and bread, in particular, truly showcased the essence of German culinary excellence. Of course, as a boutique hotel under the GHA DISCOVERY alliance, what truly impressed me most was the service. From the welcoming attitude of the staff to the efficiency of the management team in resolving issues, it truly lives up to Kempinski's reputation as a European hotel aristocrat. Special thanks to the hotel management and operations teams for their meticulous care and excellent service during my stay. Employees like Wilson, the Director of Rooms, Paul, the Guest Services Manager, and Lucy, the Executive Lounge intern, all deserve special recognition!

Staying at Cliff Hotel was the most delightful surprise of my trip to Chongqing! Perched on a hillside, its minimalist white design and geometric lines, especially at night against the illuminated river, make it look like a 'spaceship' docked atop Yuzhong, giving off a super futuristic vibe. Every photo taken here turns out stunning. The room experience was absolutely fantastic! The massive 270-degree floor-to-ceiling windows offer panoramic views of the majestic Yangtze River and the dazzling city lights. You can lie in bed and soak in the breathtaking nightscape – it's incredibly therapeutic. The infinity pool on the rooftop was the absolute highlight. The water seamlessly blends with the skyline, and swimming while overlooking the river feels like being in the clouds. It's definitely a must-visit spot for a vacation photoshoot. Furthermore, the hotel's service was impeccable. The butler was warm and attentive, even offering complimentary fruit. Located in Qixinggang, it's a tranquil oasis yet conveniently close to major attractions like Jiefangbei and Hongyadong, making getting around super easy. Excellent hotel in the heart of Jiefangbei. Perfect location, walking distance from Hongyadong and the Liberation Monument. The room is spacious and well maintained, breakfast is generous and well put together. But what truly made the stay enjoyable was the staff. Shazz from the breakfast and restaurant team deserves a special mention , attentive, always available, with that kind of genuine care you can't fake. Every morning she made you feel like a regular, not just another guest passing through. Kidi at reception was equally outstanding. professional, efficient, and with a warmth that goes well beyond just doing the job. Her English is excellent and she has a natural ability to make solo travelers feel at ease in an unfamiliar city. In a hotel of this category, service can often feel anonymous and standardized. Here it's different, you can tell the people actually care. That makes all the difference. Highly recommended without hesitation.

I thoroughly enjoyed staying at this property.  Everyone was so nice and kind.  The service was top- notch.  The amenities were plenty and easy accessible.   A few extras that made everything worth it were the full- sized refrigerator, with freezer, the washing machine (for which they provided soap as well), dish washer, stove top, towel drier ( in the washroom) and full sized closet.  The view was so beautiful and calming as well.   Everything about this room was just so nice and exactly what I needed.     I didn’t realize how perfect the location was in relation to almost everything that I wanted to see.   When I figured that out, I just got up every day and walked to everything that I needed or wanted to see.   It was extremely close to a lot of restaurants, malls, local shops and smaller attractions.  I was less than a 10 -15 minute walk to Raffles City Shopping Center where there is a 5 story mall, Movie theatre, roof top attraction with the swing,  SKY WALK and also the river front park with amazing views.  Same distance for Hongyadong, the viewing platform, the Qiansemen Bridge- if you wanted to walk across the bridge at night- I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!  There is so much to see and experience between the hotel and these attractions.  Your days will be filled with fun and adventure.    If ever I have the opportunity to come back to the city, I will very excited to repeat this experience.

Definitely not recommended on WARM DAYS because the hotel will turn off AC completely. I stayed at this hotel from 5/8 to 5/11, In-room HVAC only worked on daytime when outdoor temperature reached about 30 degrees, in room temperature was cooling down and comfortable enough. However, the hotel shut down AC system at night because outdoor temperature is not hot enough, that leading to in room temperature went back to 27 degrees, I got totally sleepless. Understood the hotel tried to save money on electricity, but AC system is the one of basic amenity systems and should not shut down the mostly of the days. Moldy grout, moldy caulking are all around the shower, the picture attached. Non adjustable shower head with fixed holder need upgraded. That shows lack of the maintenance for rooms. Choosing the Westin Chongqing Jiefangbei for my trip was absolutely the best decision! I have to give it a huge five-star rating! First off, the location is unbeatable. The hotel is right in the heart of the Jiefangbei central business district. It's just a few minutes' walk downstairs to Jiefangbei Monument and Bayi Delicious Street, making it super convenient for shopping and dining. The nearby subway station also makes getting to various attractions incredibly easy. Then there's the service, which was truly exceptional! The day before check-in, a staff member from the hotel's guest experience department proactively called me and then added me on WeChat. They sent detailed check-in instructions and various practical tips in advance, which made me feel completely at ease even before arriving. During my stay, any questions I had on WeChat were answered promptly, with a very quick response time. From the front desk to housekeeping, every employee was warm, attentive, professional, and efficient, truly making me feel at home! The breakfast was another major highlight! The variety was incredibly rich, with both Chinese and Western delicacies, plus authentic local specialties like Chongqing noodles and spicy wontons. Every morning, I had a super satisfying meal! Finally, the room was spotless and tidy, with extremely high hygiene standards. The bedding was soft and comfortable, and the Westin's 'Heavenly Bed' was truly amazing to sleep on – I had a wonderful night's rest! In summary, this stay was perfect, and I will definitely choose this hotel again on my next visit to Chongqing. I highly recommend it to all friends visiting Chongqing!

I stayed at Niccolo Chongqing for a total of 7 days this time, and my overall experience was excellent. First and foremost, the hotel's location is superb, right above IFS. It's perfect for both business travelers and tourists. The area downstairs is relatively quiet and pleasant, great for an evening stroll. If you want to visit attractions, you can just cross the bridge. Secondly, and most importantly, a good hotel ensures a good night's sleep, and Niccolo Chongqing excels at this. As soon as you enter, there's a subtle, soothing fragrance. The bedding is soft and comfortable, guaranteeing a peaceful sleep. Finally, regarding the facilities, the hotel's gym is relatively well-equipped and can meet most fitness needs. The hotel pool is also located on a high floor, offering beautiful views. Speaking of which, the hotel itself is on a high floor, providing breathtaking views outside the window, directly overlooking Hongyadong and the confluence of the two rivers. A big bonus was adding the butler, Heidi, on WeChat. It was incredibly convenient to contact her directly whenever needed, which promptly led me to extend my stay after a few days.

It's rare to encounter such excellent service. Xiao Zeng was incredibly patient and enthusiastic, meticulously explaining any questions I had and handling things reliably. The surrounding natural scenery is unique; the side gate of the vast grassland leads directly to an outdoor pasture, perfect for a relaxing stroll. The observation deck offers panoramic views, with the red maple, stone forest, and peculiar rock formations complemented by green plants, creating a distinctive charm. At the pet park, you can feed alpacas and sika deer, and the travel photos and candid shots turn out beautifully. My overall travel and accommodation experience was impeccable.

The Marriott hotel in Chongqing is spotlessly clean everywhere. The lobby is bright and spacious, the rooms are pristine, the bedding is sparkling white, and the bathroom is gleaming. With brand-new facilities and meticulous cleanliness, it's a truly reassuring stay. Highly recommended!

The hotel itself is good, with an excellent location and a decent breakfast, especially considering the price. However, looking at the pictures, doesn't it resemble a product promotion center? I haven't seen anything like it in hotels of the same caliber. The hotel manager did say that if I don't like it next time, I can let them know in advance and they'll remove it.

This stay far exceeded my expectations! The hotel's location is excellent, with shopping and transportation easily accessible nearby. Upon entering the room, there were no strange odors. The floors, bathroom, and desk were all spotlessly clean, and toiletries were fully stocked. The mattress was just the right firmness, and the soundproofing was good, allowing for a quiet night's rest. The front desk staff were patient and meticulous, responding promptly to requests and providing attentive service. The hotel's facilities are well-maintained, and overall, it offers fantastic value for money. It's definitely my top choice for accommodation when traveling, and I've already recommended it to friends!

Traveling to Chongqing with my child, I compared several hotels before buying a group deal for this one online. It's truly well-suited for families. The twin room offers plenty of space for kids to run around comfortably. The entire room is very clean, and the bedding is soft and skin-friendly. Its central location in Jiefangbei means we can walk to Hongyadong and Raffles City, saving us from long treks with the little one. There are numerous convenience stores and snack shops nearby, making it easy to find kid-friendly breakfast options that are more varied than the hotel's breakfast. The staff are gentle and patient, and they offer free stroller storage. Check-in and check-out were quick and efficient. The group purchase price was very reasonable, and the weekend surcharge was clearly and transparently marked with no hidden tricks. They also support free refunds for itinerary changes, making it a great value for a short trip with kids.

Staying at this hotel was such a comfortable experience during my trip! The hotel amenities were really thoughtful. The breakfast had a great variety and tasted delicious, and they even offered a complimentary breakfast for my child. The slim front desk attendant was incredibly kind and even gave me a foot bath, which instantly relieved my travel fatigue. It was truly warm and considerate service. The hotel's environment is elegant, and the location is convenient, close to both scenic spots and commercial areas. Highly recommended! [Strong][Strong][Strong]

The room facilities are clean and hygienic, the environment is good and not noisy. The lady at the front desk who checked in and the service staff were gentle and polite. You can eat authentic Chongqing hotpot 🥘 downstairs, nice. There are also commercial streets and different snacks and convenience stores nearby, which is quite good.

The service was absolutely fantastic! The front desk staff were very service-oriented, always greeting guests with a smile, and actively asking if we needed anything. The room was also spotlessly clean. The location is super easy to find, right next to the South Gate of Southwest University of Political Science and Law. I'll definitely consider staying here again next time I visit the university.
