Practical Tips for Riding the Chongqing Metro
Chongqing’s mountain-city metro system differs greatly from North American transit networks. Below are practical tips for Canadian travellers to ensure a smooth riding experience:
- Adapt to Terrain Elevation Changes: Stations feature long staircases, steep escalators and sloped passageways due to Chongqing’s hilly landscape. Travellers with luggage or limited mobility should reserve extra time for transfers.
- Mandatory Security Checks: All metro entrances require standard security screening for passengers and luggage. Cooperate with inspections to speed up entry.
- Handle Language Barriers: Station signs and ticket machines support English, but announcements and staff conversations are mainly in Chinese. Prepare an offline translation tool or check routes via Trip.com for easy navigation.
- Follow Local Metro Etiquette: Queue orderly for tickets and boarding, offer seats to seniors and parents with children, and avoid loud noise or eating on board.
- Confirm Last Train Times: Suburban lines close early. Always check final departure times in advance to avoid being stranded. Core lines offer extended hours on weekends and holidays for late-night sightseeing.

The front desk service was excellent; the staff, all dressed in suits and white shirts, were incredibly polite. Even the cleaning staff would politely greet you, which made for a very comfortable experience. The breakfast was also very generous. Laundry and drying facilities were always available without any wait, which was a nice touch.
The building itself is grand, with high floors offering great views, especially pleasant at night. The soundproofing is excellent too; the heavy doors and soundproof strips mean you can't hear any noise from next door. They also provide a complimentary large fruit platter, a free minibar, and many free beverages. I particularly liked that the bed area, a more private space, isn't visible immediately upon entering the room – a very well-thought-out design. 👍👍👍
Hygiene: The cleanliness was exceptional. I checked several nooks and crannies, and there was no dust, which was very impressive.
Environment: The environment was also fantastic. The hallways felt private and quiet. The high floor offered expansive views and good natural light, which was a big plus.
Facilities: The lobby manager mentioned that the hotel was only renovated this year, and staying in a new hotel and new rooms was very comfortable. The overall quality is definitely top-notch. 👍👍👍FromPLN 125

Good value stay. Room is super comfortable and quiet. Executive lounge is relatively small but has a good variety of food and drinks. Breakfast is huge but area can get packed on holidays so you don’t want to seat too near the food. Location is not exactly center of the city, but close enough on a quieter, niecer neighborhood. This was our second time staying at this hotel, and once again it did not disappoint. The location is excellent — within walking distance to the metro station and close to our favorite restaurants, which makes getting around and dining out very convenient.
We also tried the hotel’s dinner buffet during this visit and were very happy with the experience. The variety of dishes was impressive, and everything we sampled was fresh and flavorful.
Overall, the combination of a great location, comfortable stay, and enjoyable dining makes this hotel a reliable choice for us. We look forward to returning again in the future.FromPLN 208

Facilities: The room facilities were well-maintained, and the bathroom didn't have any unpleasant odors or mildew. Overall, it was very clean and tidy. The one-bedroom suite was decorated simply, and the coffee maker, microwave, oven, refrigerator, and washing machine were all from well-known brands. For the same price, staying in a serviced apartment at a landmark location like this is a great deal. Breakfast was on par with a five-star hotel, offering everything you could want. A big shout-out to the lobby staff; they were very proactive and helpful, even showing us the way to the Chaotianmen dock nearby.

I've been to Chongqing many times, but this was my first stay at a Kempinski. I'd seen on Trip.com that the hotel opened in 2012, so I assumed the facilities and decor might be a bit outdated. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that despite being open for 14 years, this Kempinski is still exceptionally well-maintained. The original construction materials and furnishings were clearly high-quality, luxury items, so overall, aside from the slightly older design and decor style, everything else was unexpectedly good. This includes the dining options – whether it was Elements Western Restaurant, the Beer Bar, or the Executive Lounge, the food quality was impressive. The desserts and bread, in particular, truly showcased the essence of German culinary excellence. Of course, as a boutique hotel under the GHA DISCOVERY alliance, what truly impressed me most was the service. From the welcoming attitude of the staff to the efficiency of the management team in resolving issues, it truly lives up to Kempinski's reputation as a European hotel aristocrat. Special thanks to the hotel management and operations teams for their meticulous care and excellent service during my stay. Employees like Wilson, the Director of Rooms, Paul, the Guest Services Manager, and Lucy, the Executive Lounge intern, all deserve special recognition!FromPLN 192

We were two adults and two children, in town for a concert. Now that the kids are older, a comfortable sleep is a priority, so I always look for hotels with two 1.8m beds. This often limits my choices, as most other hotels only offer 1.35m twin beds. I really appreciate that this place has two 1.8m beds. The location is excellent – a mere three to four-minute walk from Jiefangbei, and the nearest subway station, Jiaochangkou, is less than a 5-minute walk away. The snack street downstairs is also incredibly convenient. It's also very close to Shancheng 18 Steps, and you can take Line 2 directly to the Olympic Sports Center for concerts. Overall, we had a very satisfying stay. We did encounter a couple of minor issues during our stay – the shower head wouldn't switch and the internet wasn't connecting, but these were resolved very quickly. If we come back with the kids, I'd definitely choose this hotel again. The only downside is that there are many hotels in this building, so the elevators can take a while to arrive.FromPLN 101

This stay was absolutely fantastic! The lady at the front desk was so welcoming and enthusiastic. I followed her recommendations for local eateries and they were all delicious, frequented by many locals – much more authentic than anything I could've found online. The room was huge, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering direct views of the Yangtze River and the bridge. The location is super convenient; there are several local noodle shops right downstairs, and it feels like an authentic old residential area, not overly commercialized. Came to Chongqing for a concert and after doing some research and comparisons, I decided on the Mercure Hotel Jiefangbei. The transportation is indeed convenient, it's very close to the subway station, making it easy to get anywhere, and there's a food street right outside. The room was very clean and hygienic, and the front desk staff were really enthusiastic. My original room was near some equipment platforms and had noise, but after I reported it, they immediately and seamlessly moved me to a higher floor. Came to Chongqing for my kid's spring break, and the hotel's location is excellent – you can see Jiefangbei right from the main entrance. However, the hotel is quite old. The air conditioning units feel like they're from a renovation ten years ago. Because it was raining the day we arrived, the room also had a strong musty smell, and there was a bad odor from the bathroom drains. We arrived too late that day to switch rooms, but I did communicate the situation to the front desk when checking out. They responded very quickly, and their service attitude is definitely commendable. With the room rate approaching 900 near the May Day holiday, the value for money is questionable. The facilities are a bit old, but generally well-maintained. I stayed on the 26th floor and the room had a damp smell, which wasn't great. The windows felt like they weren't there at all; they provided no soundproofing. The showerhead was leaking and needs to be replaced. The elevators in the public areas felt like they had no AC, were very hot at noon, and were slow.

Environment: Meets Hyatt standards.
Service: So-so. After 10 PM, there was no answer when calling room service.

We stayed 3 nights at this hotel recommended by my friend with nice river view at high floor of 22 storey.
This hotel is within walking distance of places of interest such as 解放碑,洪崖洞,十八梯 and 魁星楼。
Many eateries around this area and there was a washing machine cum drying machine where the drying process for our clothing took about 2 hours. But have to beware of those promoting on the streets one day tour where the tour guide will tell you that she will not follow on the pamphlet's itineraries.
Moreover, we paid one day tour of RMB80 , ended up need to pay extra RMB221 for 25 minutes lunch for 1 table of RMB35 per pax and some entrance fees. We were introduced the one day tour at the road side while we scouting for breakfast and the sales girl said the tour guide could bring us for breakfast there.
But the tour guide said there was no time for breakfast when they got a car to meet the tour guide in a big bus and we had to go hungry until lunch time.
The bellhops were helpful as they helped us the book the cab or Didi as our apps were unable to book. One of the bellhops even asked us to pay the driver and actually was deducted from his pay wallet. We quickly called up the hotel to pay back the bellhop.
This hotel needed us to pay a security payment of RMB500 where we already paid the 3 nites payment through trip com but they promptly refunded us after we checked out.FromPLN 170

Having previously stayed at Niccolo Changsha, I arrived at Niccolo Chongqing with high expectations, eager to experience another 'Beijing girl' property.
Like other Niccolos, this one is also located atop an IFC building and shares a similar minimalist luxury design – a popular trend in interior design these past few years. While not overtly unique, its understated elegance appeals to me. I particularly enjoyed the hotel's signature scent, which is consistent with the toiletries in the room; it's a lovely fragrance that really enhances the experience.
The service truly stands out. The hotel contacted me in advance, and check-in was efficient, with staff guiding me to the elevator and my room. For any requests, guests can reach out to their butler. Our butler, Yannie, was not only highly efficient but also incredibly warm and helpful, patiently answering all our questions about local cuisine.

I do have one minor complaint and one regret. The downside is that while the shower and toilet were separate in my room, the toilet didn't have a door, which unfortunately impacted my overall impression of the room. My regret is that my room key wasn't personalized with my name. The front desk mentioned the engraving machine was out of order, and I hope to get that done on a future visit.FromPLN 588

I wanted a quieter hotel and ended up choosing the Marriott. It's definitely much quieter than the bustling downtown area of Yuzhong. The hotel is a bit older, so the facilities are a little dated, but the room we stayed in was well-maintained. The breakfast is great for those who don't eat spicy food, and the *xiaomian* (noodles) were delicious! I especially loved their homemade chili oil – a spoonful in the noodles made them fragrant without being too spicy. In the evening, you can go up to the observation deck to see the night view, with the neon lights of both banks stretching out before you.FromPLN 247

Lijia/Happy Valley Chongqing|9.92km from city centre
The hygiene, environment, and facilities are all great, and it's not far from Happy Valley. The room design and color scheme are also decent. The only regrettable thing is that the swimming pool was closed during the Chinese New Year. My kids were really looking forward to swimming, so they were quite disappointed.FromPLN 311

I have to give a huge shout-out to the customer service ladies at this hotel! From my initial phone inquiry to checking in, every step of the way, I experienced professional and thoughtful service. When I was looking to book, the customer service rep patiently answered all my questions and even recommended a suitable room type based on my needs. At check-in, the front desk agent not only processed everything quickly but also thoughtfully informed me about the hotel's facilities and nearby dining options. Any minor issues I encountered during my stay were swiftly addressed and perfectly resolved with just one call to customer service. The service was incredibly warm and attentive. They brought fruit to our room upon check-in and even shared travel tips! Any requests we had were responded to promptly, and they even offered us an umbrella when it rained ☂️
The room was very charming, with quite new facilities. It was cleaned thoroughly and promptly, and the bed was super comfortable 😌
The hotel's location is very central, making it easy to walk everywhere. There's even a Li Ruo Tao (a store/cafe, I assume) right across the street, which meant I had to grab a drink there every day 🆘
The rainfall showerhead in the bathroom was huge and had excellent water pressure – showering was a real treat! The only thing is, you can't really avoid the initial blast of water when you turn it on 😱
Overall, a fantastic experience!FromPLN 189

I booked a room with breakfast included, which was super convenient. The dining area was right downstairs, offering a great variety of delicious and authentic dishes. Plus, there's a 'food street' nearby, so food, drinks, and entertainment were all easily accessible. The bathtub in the room was spotless and even came with a disposable tub liner, which was a nice touch. Overall, the value for money was excellent. The facilities were very comprehensive and the room was exceptionally clean. It was also very spacious and the environment was really comfortable. [sun emoji]FromPLN 68

Staying at this hotel was such a comfortable experience during my trip! The hotel amenities were really thoughtful. The breakfast had a great variety and tasted delicious, and they even offered a complimentary breakfast for my child. The slim front desk attendant was incredibly kind and even gave me a foot bath, which instantly relieved my travel fatigue. It was truly warm and considerate service. The hotel's environment is elegant, and the location is convenient, close to both scenic spots and commercial areas. Highly recommended! [Strong][Strong][Strong]FromPLN 110

The room was clean, the decor was a bit dated, but overall comfortable. The room facing the road was noisy, but it didn't affect my high-quality sleep. My friends stayed in the quieter room on the other side. The breakfast was plentiful and delicious. Transportation nearby is very convenient; it's not far from any major attractions. There are many restaurants across the street from the hotel, so you can easily find something good to eat. The front desk staff were very welcoming. This is my second time staying here, and I'll definitely stay here again next time.FromPLN 107

The journey to the city centre (Jiaochangkou) takes approximately 40–50 minutes on Line 3.Do I need a Chinese bank card to pay for the Chongqing Metro?
No, you do not need a Chinese bank card to ride the Chongqing Metro. International visitors, including Canadians, can pay using Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to an international credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard accepted). Alternatively, you can purchase single-journey tickets at automated ticket machines using cash (Chinese yuan) or mobile payment.
