"Baien is truly the best. The private open-air bath and the large public bath are both excellent. (Note: Be sure to confirm the private open-air bath when booking your ryokan stay.) The ryokan is spacious, so walks around the property are lovely. Both breakfast and dinner (kaiseki) are also superb. However, there's no entertainment nearby, so if your sole purpose is to enjoy the hot springs, you definitely won't regret it. I'd love to visit again in winter."

"It was evening when we arrived, and there wasn't much service, just a simple check-in. The room was quite old, but it's very convenient because it's close to the station, about a 10-minute walk. The roads in Yufuin are narrow and uneven, so pushing luggage was tiring, which made even a 10-minute walk feel long. The value for money isn't great; it's old and small, and everything inside looks like it's from the 90s."

"We went to Fukuoka for Chinese New Year, and since my husband loves hot springs, we decided to stay two nights in Yufuin. The inn's location was superb, close to Lake Kinrin, and very quiet. Just a short walk away was Yufuin main street. We booked late, so our only option was a Japanese-Western style room without a private hot spring, which was a pity and a bit disappointing for my husband. Our 'one-night, two-meals' plan was incredibly filling, featuring what seemed like kaiseki cuisine plus either wagyu barbecue or wagyu shabu-shabu. I'm not really an expert on kaiseki, but I could definitely tell the food was exquisite and fresh. Since we don't speak Japanese, the inn assigned a young, English-speaking waitress to attend to us throughout our stay, which was very thoughtful. As I mentioned, the food portions had many courses, and we were quite full by the end. When the waitress asked if we wanted rice and we replied 'just a little,' she seemed genuinely concerned, thinking perhaps we didn't like the food 😅. I wanted to tell her we were simply already full. As for the downsides, my husband found the toilet a bit far from the sink, especially in the private toilet within the bedroom. The inn also didn't offer laundry service; staff advised us to use the laundromat on the main market street if we needed to wash clothes. In the end, we decided against it and waited until we returned to Fukuoka to do our laundry at the hotel there. Also, I imagine the inn is a traditional Japanese establishment, and the staff are quite principled. We were late arriving due to unfamiliarity with the transport, so dinner was pushed back to around 7:30 PM. They seemed a little displeased but remained composed. On our way back, as our preferred train/bus tickets were sold out, we had to leave earlier. The inn was accommodating with our breakfast time. We initially asked them to reduce the portion for the child and just serve scrambled eggs, but they insisted on serving the full original portions, telling us to eat as much as we could. Their reasoning was that since we had paid, we should receive the full amount we ordered, which we respected. We simply didn't want to waste food. Overall, we were satisfied and really appreciated the Japanese culture and traditional decor in all aspects."

"Staying overnight at an onsen ryokan in Yufu is truly a dream come true. The hotel is nestled in the mountains, about a kilometer's walk from Lake Kinrin, but it's an uphill climb. Luckily, we had our luggage forwarded beforehand, so pushing the stroller up was manageable, albeit a bit of a struggle. Since we were traveling with a child, we booked a suite in the main building. The space was incredibly generous, featuring a living room and a large bedroom, each with its own tea-drinking and scenic view areas. This allowed adults and children to enjoy their activities without disturbing each other. Our room had a private hot spring bath, or we could walk across the courtyard to the main public bathhouse. Soaking in the evening or before sunrise in the morning was incredibly relaxing. Hotel staff could communicate in English, which was very convenient. It was interesting to note that they would return to town to rest after 10 PM, so there were no staff members on duty overnight. Ctrip always seems to have unclear descriptions for the 'one-night, two-meal' plan at Japanese ryokans. Our booking showed meals for three people, but this particular ryokan charged different accommodation fees based on the child's age. Our 2-year-old was charged 3300 yen, which didn't include meals, only free rice. However, the adult meal portions were very generous, and sharing from the hot pot was more than enough. On the second morning, you can book a taxi to the station at the hotel's front desk. Check-out time is 10 AM."

"The only thing I found that deducted one point from the facilities was that they were old and underdeveloped. After eating a lot for breakfast and dinner, I soaked in the hot springs and it was the best!"

"I booked the most expensive room. Upon arriving in Yufuin, I called to request a shuttle bus. The bus arrived quickly, in just 5 minutes. The staff member who picked me up was very friendly and chatted with me, introducing the area around Yufuin. After arriving at the hotel, the staff also kindly helped with my luggage and provided information such as meal times, using a little English to help me understand. After a quick check-in, they took us to our room and explained all the facilities and how to use them in great detail. The hotel also thoughtfully provided various toiletries, and there were even different styles for men and women! The room was very luxurious and fully equipped, and the private onsen (hot spring) was very comfortable. The dining service was also excellent, and the food was delicious, especially the beef. We initially chose hot pot, but later wanted to switch to sukiyaki, which they quickly arranged. Overall, the quality was very much in line with the price. There were only two drawbacks: First, the room didn't provide a microwave or kitchenware. The heating service only lasted until 9 pm, which was relatively early, so we couldn't enjoy a late-night snack. However, this might be due to the locals' schedule. Second, the only kitchen utensil provided in the room—the kettle—was extremely dirty, as if it hadn't been washed in ten years. This prevented me from cooking instant noodles, and the hotel is also quite far from the city center. These are minor drawbacks, which bothered me a bit as I enjoy Japanese convenience store snacks, but they are insignificant compared to the overall quality of the hotel. I would definitely stay at this hotel again next year."

"The hotel situated in the mountain, location is not convenient, would recommend to drive is better. We had called the hotel front desk a day before to arrange a discounted taxi from Yafin station to the hotel. The front desk receptionist speaks very well English which is very easy to communicate. Overall hotel is nice and clean, very quiet environment to relax. At night, you can see plenty of stars in the sky which is very beautiful."

"This beautiful Ryokan is over 100 years old with deep heritage. I like that it stay as it is as if time stood still. So full of character. I was drawn to the onsens featuring beautiful outdoor views. You'll get to enjoy indoor and outdoor onsens here.. You get to try different types of onsens as they switch around. The highlight was the mountain view, the tranquility that some accommodation lacks due to the amount of guests. Here, you see mostly adults, hence irs ideal for people looking for a quieter retreat. Finally I was absolutely blown away by the wagyu beef at each dinner buffet. The Oita beef was of good quality and there was crab legs and so many variety of seafood and Oita specialty. Breakfast did not disappoint. Love the Yufuin milk and the pudding. Service staff was very attentive too. Ideally for non driving travellers. A short walk to the station and kinrin river."
