Overview of Hangzhou Metro

Source: Wikipedia
As of 2026, the Hangzhou Metro system operates 12 fully functional in-service lines, covering a total track length of 516 kilometres with 262 independent stations (excluding overlapping interchange stations). The network comprehensively covers all 10 administrative districts of Hangzhou, including Xiaoshan, Yuhang, Linping, and Fuyang, serving as the backbone of the city’s public transportation system.
Hangzhou Metro Lines & Key Station Highlights

Each line serves distinct travel needs, from airport and high-speed rail transfers to scenic spot and downtown commuting. Below is a sorted table of core metro lines most useful for Canadian tourists and international visitors, with clear route positioning and travel highlights:
Metro Line | Line Positioning | Route & Coverage | Key Travel Highlights (For Canadian Visitors) |
|---|---|---|---|
Line 1 | East-West Main Trunk / Sightseeing Core Line | Runs between Xianghu and Xiaoshan International Airport, spanning downtown and airport areas | Covers top tourist stops including Longxiangqiao Station (walking distance to West Lake) and central Hangzhou Railway Station. Perfect for downtown sightseeing, scenic spot visits and urban travel. |
Line 3 | North-South Scenic Leisure Line | Connects Shima to the core West Lake tourist area, covering northern and central Hangzhou | Serves Xixi Wetland South Station (direct gateway to Xixi National Wetland Park) and Huanglong Sports Centre Station. Ideal for nature exploration, outdoor leisure and scenic tours. |
Line 7 | Airport & Downtown Rapid Link | Directly connects Xiaoshan International Airport to central Hangzhou downtown | Greatly shortens airport-city transfer time, the most convenient regular transit option for international arrivals and departures for Canadian travelers. |
Line 19 | Airport & High-Speed Rail Express Line | Links Xiaoshan International Airport with Hangzhou East Railway Station and Hangzhou West Railway Station | The fastest express transit route for combined flight and high-speed rail travel. It is the top choice for Canadian tourists planning cross-city trips across China via Hangzhou transportation hubs. |

Hangzhou Metro Operating Hours
Regular Daily Operating Hours (Most Lines)
Hangzhou Metro maintains a stable daily schedule with minor differences between starting terminals and intermediate stations:
- First Train: Approximately 06:00 AM at origin stations; intermediate stations start service 1–20 minutes later
- Last Train: 22:30–23:00 PM at origin stations. Updated precise schedules: Line 1 (Xiaoshan Airport branch) last train departs at 22:50 PM; Line 2 final departure is around 23:02 PM
- Train Frequency: 2–6 minutes interval during weekday peak hours (morning & evening rush); 5–10 minutes interval during off-peak hours, ensuring minimal waiting time
Special Hour Adjustments (Holidays & Peak Travel Seasons)
To accommodate passenger surges, Hangzhou Metro extends operating hours on designated dates, a key benefit for travellers with late arrivals:
- Weekends & Public Holidays: Major tourist-friendly lines (1, 3, 4, 6, 19) extend last train service by 30–60 minutes
- Spring Festival & National Travel Peaks: From late January to early February annually, most lines extend last train times to 23:00 PM or later. Core transportation hubs (Hangzhou East & West Railway Stations) offer extended service until 00:00–01:15 AM on return peak days
- Suburban Branch Lines: No extended hours, strictly following regular daily closing schedules
Hangzhou Metro Fare Rules & Payment Methods

All fares follow a distance-based tiered pricing system (2026 official standard, no recent price adjustments). Below is the detailed fare structure with CAD approximate conversions for Canadian travellers (based on 2026 mid-market exchange rate: 1 CNY ≈ 0.19 CAD):
- Base Fare: Starting at 2 CNY (~0.38 CAD) for trips within 4 km
- Tiered Increment: 4–12 km: +1 CNY per 4 km; 12–24 km: +1 CNY per 6 km; Over 24 km: +1 CNY per 8 km
- Maximum Single Fare: 9 CNY (~1.71 CAD) for full-length long-distance trips
- Ride Time Limit: Valid travel duration is 240 minutes per single trip. Passengers exceeding the time limit will be charged the maximum single fare as a supplementary fee
Canadian Travel Tip: Metro fares in Hangzhou are extremely affordable compared to Canadian urban transit systems (Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal). Unlimited-ride tourist passes offer exceptional value for multi-day stays.
Hangzhou Metro Payment Methods
Hangzhou Metro supports diverse cashless and cash payment options, with no Chinese bank card required for foreign visitors. All methods below are fully accessible for Canadian tourists:
1. QR Code Payment (Most Convenient for Foreigners)
Canadian visitors can access metro QR codes through three mainstream platforms: the official Hangzhou Metro App, Alipay, and WeChat City Services. Exclusive tip for international travelers: Alipay supports binding overseas credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB) issued in Canada, eliminating the need for a Chinese bank account or local phone card. Once bound, you can generate a dynamic QR code to scan and ride directly, which is the most hassle-free payment method for first-time Canadian visitors.
2. Single Journey Tickets
Physical tickets can be purchased at station self-service vending machines or manual ticket counters. Vending machines accept cash (CNY), mobile payments, and digital RMB. Unused tickets with no entry records are refundable at the original purchase station on the same day.
3. Transit Cards
Hangzhou Citizen Cards and Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai T-Union Cards are available for frequent travellers, offering a 9% discount on regular fares. Suitable for long-term stays in eastern China.
4. NFC & Digital RMB
Tap-and-go NFC payment is compatible with Apple Wallet and mainstream Android NFC wallets, supporting quick entry without physical tickets or QR codes. Digital RMB payment is also available via the Hangzhou Metro App or official E-CNY App, partnered with major Chinese banks. Note that digital RMB is optional for foreign travelers, and mainstream international payment methods are fully sufficient for daily rides.
5. Tourist Passes (Best Value for Canadian Visitors)
Exclusive electronic unlimited-ride passes for short-term travellers, available for purchase directly on the Hangzhou Metro App (2026 valid pricing, CAD conversion attached):
- 1-Day Pass: 15 CNY (~2.85 CAD)
- 3-Day Pass: 40 CNY (~7.60 CAD)
- 5-Day Pass: 60 CNY (~11.40 CAD)
- 7-Day Pass: 80 CNY (~15.20 CAD)
Canadian Travel Tip: For most 5–7 day Hangzhou travel itineraries covering West Lake, Xixi Wetland, airport and railway station transfers, the 7-day unlimited ride pass delivers the best cost performance, saving frequent ticket-purchasing time and reducing travel budget.
Quick Canada-Friendly Hangzhou Metro Travel Notes

- Full English Support: All stations are equipped with standard English signage, broadcast announcements, and English-mode self-service machines, bringing zero obstacle for Canadian travelers who only speak English.
- Ultra-Low Travel Cost: Compared with public transit in Canadian cities (Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal), Hangzhou Metro fares are extremely affordable, greatly cutting down daily travel expenses.
- High Accessibility: The network covers core tourist and transportation hubs, with short transfer distances and high punctuality, perfectly matching independent travel and itinerary planning for Canadian visitors.

Location: In the Hang Lung commercial area, super convenient for shopping, dining, and everything.
Environment: The hotel isn't brand new, but it's well-equipped and quite busy. There were even tour groups staying during my visit.
Service: The front desk upgraded me to a king room with a bathtub.
Room: Spacious and clean. However, the soundproofing could be a bit better.
Food: The dining area is a bit small, but they offer basic options like coffee, fruit, and noodles.

The Sofitel Hangzhou Westlake, located at 333 West Lake Avenue, Shangcheng District, Hangzhou, is an older five-star hotel. The entrance looked a bit messy, and when my companion and I, both seniors, got out of the taxi with our luggage, no one offered to help. At the front desk, the young man spoke nicely and arranged a quiet room for us on a higher floor (the fifth floor). However, after checking in, we realized there was actually a sixth floor above us (the executive rooms we booked were already on the fifth and sixth floors). It felt a bit like a bait-and-switch. We occasionally encountered staff who were mostly expressionless, though the cleaning lady on our floor was very kind and polite.
The so-called executive room had a window that faced directly onto another building, only about twenty meters away. If it were summer, it would be inconvenient to open the curtains during the day. The room had good soundproofing, and we barely heard any outside noise at night. However, the bathtub didn't come with a disposable liner, making it practically useless.
In the evening, we went to the fifth-floor restaurant for the happy hour special, and the two young ladies serving there were very pleasant.
The hotel's swimming pool is quite small and has limited operating hours.
The rooftop garden is very nice and offers a great view of most of West Lake.FromUS$105

Having lived in both northern and southern parts of the country for many years, I've come to realize that experiencing different lifestyles significantly enhances one's quality of life and emotional well-being. That's why Hangzhou, often called 'heaven on earth,' is always my top choice for a relaxing vacation away from Beijing. The name 'Shangri-La Hotel, Hangzhou' itself clearly indicates its prime location in the city center, directly connected to the high-end shopping mall, Kerry Center. This powerful alliance between a luxury hotel and a premium shopping complex is a prime example of brilliant business strategy.
During my stay, I was warmly welcomed by the team, especially Emma, Clara, and Xenla. Emma's service was exceptional and personalized throughout, feeling just like a family member. We clicked from the moment I checked in. She's of average height, gentle, charming, elegant in her demeanor, and highly professional. We exchanged WeChat contacts, and she was incredibly responsive and knowledgeable, providing instant recommendations for local food and any other travel inquiries I had. Following her advice and tips led to some truly excellent experiences. For instance, her recommendation for 'Ye Ma,' an outstanding representative of Hangzhou cuisine – lauded by the Michelin Guide and CCTV – really lived up to its reputation. Conveniently located right in Kerry Center, it was just a few minutes' walk to the restaurant. Both the dining environment and food quality were exactly what I'd hoped for. I'm truly grateful for her dedicated service. Such hotel marketing professionals are rare and invaluable, especially for high-end luxury hotels. I sincerely hope the hotel management recognizes and commends their diligent service, dedication, and the joy they bring to guests.
Location-wise, the hotel is superb, about 800-1000 meters from West Lake, a pleasant 10-minute walk. The hotel lobby features Shangri-La's signature design elements – it's grand and soaring, exuding understated luxury yet feeling comfortable and spacious. Stepping in feels like a special occasion. My room was a garden balcony room on the third floor, which was large, tastefully decorated in subtle colors, and impeccably clean. The bedding was incredibly comfortable. Since I enjoy tea, the staff thoughtfully provided plenty of bottled water. The welcome fruit platter was generous in both variety and quantity. Breakfast offered fresh, diverse dishes, with exquisitely crafted Western pastries and bread that tasted fantastic. The dining environment was serene, and the service was attentive yet organized, setting a wonderful tone for the start of each day.FromUS$140

This is a pretty standard 4-star hotel. The facilities are a bit old but well-maintained. Compared to other hotels in the same price range, this one has a lot going for it. The location is excellent; Fengqi Station is right outside the lobby's right-hand side, and it's not crowded, making transfers very convenient. Despite being in the city center, the hotel is surprisingly quiet. Kerry Centre is next door, and it's just a few minutes' walk to West Lake, Hubin, and Wulin Road. You can reach Duanqiao and Beishan Road in less than ten minutes by bike. Definitely a great value for money!FromUS$61

I stayed here for a week on a business trip to Hangzhou, and I must say this hotel offers incredible value for money. While it's a bit older, its fantastic location and excellent transport links more than make up for it. It's just a 5-minute walk to Intime in77 and West Lake, and the main Zhiweiguan restaurant isn't far either. Plus, the hotel is exceptionally clean. The rooftop garden is truly refreshing, offering beautiful views of West Lake and even some adorable rabbits to see. I'd definitely stay here again on my next visit to Hangzhou.FromUS$29

This hotel is conveniently located just about 300 meters from the subway station. It's an established four-star hotel, making it easy to get around the city. Despite being in the urban area, it's surprisingly quiet at night, ensuring a peaceful sleep. What truly impressed me was the drinking water tap installed right at the sink. The laundry room was also very convenient. The rooftop offers great views of West Lake, and the breakfast spread was incredibly rich and varied. I initially booked for two nights, but extended my stay for another night because I was so comfortable. I'll definitely choose this hotel again when I revisit Hangzhou.FromUS$47

Our family is practically regulars at the Grand Hyatt Hangzhou, and whenever we visit Hangzhou with our child, this hotel is always our top choice. We've stayed many times, and each visit is consistently satisfying – it definitely deserves a full five-star review!
The hotel's location is absolutely perfect for families. Just cross the road and you're right by West Lake. A few minutes' walk takes you to the Hubin Music Fountain, Longxiang Bridge subway station, and the in77 shopping mall. During the day, we can stroll along the lake and take a boat ride on West Lake with our child, and in the evening, we can shop and enjoy delicious food. There's no need for long taxi rides, which doubles the happiness when traveling with kids.
Every time we check in and mention we have a child, the staff proactively prepares kids' toiletries and small slippers. We can also request a free crib, and sometimes they even provide small snacks and toys, which always makes our child incredibly happy. The rooms are spacious and not cramped, with expansive views from the floor-to-ceiling windows. When we book a lake-view room, our child loves to lean by the window and watch the boats on West Lake. In the evening, we don't have to jostle with crowds to see the music fountain – we can watch it from our room, which is convenient and safe. The bathroom has a large bathtub, perfect for letting our child soak after a day of playing, making bedtime routines very easy. Housekeeping is meticulous and thorough, and the bedding is soft and gentle on the skin, so our child falls asleep quickly after a busy day.
The breakfast selection is incredibly rich. It includes local Hangzhou specialties like Pian'er Chuan noodles and pastries, as well as kid-friendly options like milk, yogurt, steamed eggs, small buns, and hash browns. The flavors are mild and suitable for all, meeting the diverse needs of the whole family. Sitting by the window, enjoying breakfast with a lake view, truly makes the morning experience perfect. The hotel's indoor heated pool has clean water, a suitable temperature, and excellent natural light. Every time we visit, we take our child for a swim, and they absolutely love it.
Whether it's the front desk staff, concierge, or room service, everyone is gentle and patient. When we're carrying large luggage with our child and it's inconvenient, the concierge always comes forward to help. Any small request in the room is responded to quickly and efficiently, without any perfunctory delays. The staff also enthusiastically recommends kid-friendly routes and nearby restaurants, which are heartwarming details.
After so many stays, we've never had a bad experience. The hardware facilities are well-maintained, the family-friendly amenities are thoughtful, and the location is simply unbeatable. As long-term repeat guests, I sincerely recommend this place to families traveling to Hangzhou with children. It's hassle-free, comfortable, and offers a perfect experience. The next time we bring our child to West Lake, we will definitely stay at Grand Hyatt Hangzhou again!FromUS$226

This garden-style hotel is absolutely beautiful, with a back gate that leads directly to West Lake. Gemstone Hill is right across the lake, making West Lake easily accessible. Taxis, public buses, and sightseeing cars are all very convenient. The staff were very friendly. Breakfast was more Chinese-style, and you can enjoy the beautiful views of West Lake while you eat. Our weekend getaway at the Shangri-La, West Lake Hangzhou was very pleasant overall. We chose the hotel for its excellent location and strong reviews, and it lived up to expectations in many ways.
We were warmly welcomed and appreciated the thoughtful touches, including a complimentary afternoon tea, which was a very nice gesture. We were also kindly offered a late check-out until 3 pm, although we were unable to take advantage of it due to pre-booked train tickets.
What we loved most was the comfort and quality throughout our stay—the beds were very comfortable, the shower was excellent, and the breakfast was delicious with a good variety. The staff were also accommodating and attentive, which made our stay even more enjoyable.
There are a few areas that could be improved. The hotel would benefit from some light refurbishment, as the armchairs in the room showed visible stains, and the hallway carpets could use a deeper clean.

Overall stay was nice in the hotel. Rooms were clean and spacious. Breakfast had many western and Chinese options, which were good. Our package included indoor hot-spring experience which was suitable considering the cold weather outside.
Only disappointment was 'Nausicaa of the Wind Tour Ticket' which was included in the package while booking from trip.com. In trip.com under package details it was mentioned that it was a scenic stop/park and we thought entry to that place is free but additional rides are payable. This information was absolutely misleading as after wasting lot of time, the information we received (after calling the provided contact number, talking with Hotel staff) was 'Nausicaa of the Wind Tour Ticket' was not located in or nearby the hotel but was in a totally far-off place. No clear information was provided by calling the contact number on how to use the offer as mentioned in trip.com booked package description.
Either trip.com should remove that offer or provide a clear description about the location of that place, with pictures if possible, otherwise people will feel lucrative about the offer and go for the booking which actually is misleading.FromUS$121

The hotel's surroundings and interior are excellent, like a large garden. The lobby, elevators, and rooms are all decorated with Liangzhu-style features. What's most commendable is how spotlessly clean everything is, even the changing rooms and showers by the pool are impeccably tidy. Definitely a big thumbs up!
The room itself is huge, with an empty, spacious living area, and the bedroom is also very generous. The only odd thing is the small sink, which feels out of place given the immense space.
The breakfast offers a wide variety; it's not exceptionally delicious, but still pretty good.
It's not far from the Liangzhu Museum or Yubird Market. Unfortunately, it rained continuously during my stay, so I couldn't explore much, and the sky only cleared up when I was leaving. 😂 If you visit on a sunny day, there are quite a few places to enjoy.

Every year, I spend a couple of days here, and I'm always stunned by the view from the floor-to-ceiling windows in the hotel lobby. Strolling through the courtyard, the lush greenery is a feast for the eyes. In the morning, the lotus and water lilies complement each other beautifully. On my way to Building 8 every time, I see a goose with two ducks, either resting, swimming, or walking, three different species of birds, yet they look like an inseparable family. The hotel's buffet breakfast is still rich and varied, and after our meal, we can sit and chat over tea – simply delightful. This time, I also tried the food at Ziwei Hall; I hadn't managed to dine there in previous years, and I feel like I missed out on a fortune. The room facilities and housekeeping service remain top-notch. The only slight regret is that Building 3, possibly newly renovated, still has a bit of a lingering smell. Overall, the experience was truly beyond five stars.
The hotel is located in the Xin'an district, offering a peaceful, comfortable, and serene environment. The hotel's decor, overall construction planning, and garden maintenance are all top-notch. The ambiance exudes a strong, calming energy that makes you feel incredibly relaxed. The environment alone definitely earns more than five stars.
The front desk service was meticulous, but that's standard for any Four Seasons hotel.
The Jin Sha restaurant within the hotel was absolutely superb; the food was truly delicious and offered incredible value for money. Their Western restaurant was equally excellent, and the cocktails at the lobby lounge were also high quality. Even a simple Gin & Tonic showed attention to detail in both the gin and tonic water. Ordering a drink also came with homemade snacks and olives.
Breakfast was absolutely divine. Enjoying breakfast while overlooking the beautiful garden was a pure delight!
The hotel's in-house professional photography service was also top-tier. The makeup, costumes, and professionalism of the shoot were all first-rate.
The room was the only slight drawback. It wasn't an issue of being old; although it has some years on it, it's clearly well-maintained with tasteful materials, giving it a distinctive character. However, room 106, which I was assigned, was completely different from the Garden View King Room advertised on Ctrip's pictures. Being a corner room, it had poor lighting and a restricted view. The scenery and environment of the small outdoor pavilion were also very mediocre. One side was against a wall and a corridor, which felt very unpleasant. Had I known this, I wouldn't have spent an extra 2,000 yuan to choose this room (7,700+ per night). If this room is an anomaly, I suggest not assigning it to direct booking guests in the future. Wouldn't it be better to reserve it for VIP upgrades? (You can see details of the garden view in pictures 2-5).
Oh, and the private boat tour, while expensive, was worth it. I recommend gathering 6 people; it's very comfortable and offers decent value for money.
I still gave a full five-star rating because other aspects surpassed a five-star level, thus compensating for the room's shortcomings. Future guests booking the Deluxe Garden View King Room should be cautious. I recommend choosing other room types.FromUS$537

The steamed dishes restaurant is a matter of personal preference, I suppose. The in-room fruit was replenished daily, which was a nice touch, but honestly, the presentation could be improved. The variety, color combination, and arrangement of the welcome fruit didn't quite match the hotel's positioning. Even compared to other star-rated hotels, or even business hotels, the aesthetic quality in this regard is often superior. So, the fruit platter felt more like an afterthought than a highlight; perhaps not including it at all would have avoided this slight imperfection. As for the spa service, it was actually very good, but the overall experience lacked any standout features and wasn't superior to other top-tier luxury brands. It didn't offer good value for money and felt somewhat underwhelming. The entire ancient village environment is exceptionally quiet and rustic, and the guest room ambiance was spot on. The room fragrance was lovely and incredibly soothing. The housekeeping staff were also very attentive, and the turndown service was excellent. The environment is peaceful and undisturbed, and when needed, the staff's discreet thoughtfulness was truly heartwarming. The Fuyunshe sachet-making activity was interesting and meaningful. Finally, I appreciate the laundry service.FromUS$917

The room was great! Since we arrived early, the handsome guy at the front desk upgraded our room type for free and even gave our child a complimentary breakfast. Thumbs up! I have a suggestion though: it's getting warmer, so there might be mosquitoes. The front desk could consider providing some anti-itch creams like Florida Water or Band-Aid brand cream.FromUS$96

The room offers pretty good value for money! It comes with a gym and a laundry room, and it's super convenient for taking trains from the East Station. The surrounding amenities are excellent! There's also a supermarket that closes very late, which is really handy! The staff members are very nice!FromUS$35

Came to Binjiang for a late-night dog walk and to pet some dogs. The hotel location is great, with delicious Ouji Food Stall and Sister Zhou's Chicken Rack nearby. After check-in, the hotel upgraded my room. The room was very clean. I informed the hotel I have rhinitis, and they even turned on the air purifier in the room beforehand. The front desk staff and the cleaning aunties were all very friendly and responsive to requests. The only minor issue is that the robot delivery service can sometimes be a bit slow, so you might need to wait patiently. During my stay, entering and exiting the parking lot was easy; just contact the front desk with your license plate number. There are dedicated hotel parking spaces on B2 and a Tesla Supercharger on B1. There's also a NIO Power Swap Station outside the building, making it super convenient for getting around.FromUS$50

The location here is incredibly convenient; it's easy to catch a taxi to nearby subway stations, Hangzhou East Railway Station, and the West Lake business district. The room offers a great view and makes excellent use of space, making it perfect for multiple guests. I especially loved the thoughtful and cozy lighting design. The room facilities are far superior to what you'd expect at this price point, offering outstanding value for money. The laundry room is also well-equipped. Overall, my experience was fantastic, and I'll definitely be back!FromUS$39

Linping New Town Hangzhou|15.81km from city centre
Because I worked near Josi, I chose this hotel. The arrival time on the same day was already late at night. I made a note on Ctrip, I hope it is a non-smoking room. The high floor is far from the elevator. The hotel well recognized my needs and was very enthusiastic about upgrading. Considering that I didn't book breakfast, I also gave a free breakfast. Thank you very much. Back to the topic, let's talk about the hotel's own stay experience. To be honest, it's not a last resort, I haven't stayed for a long time. Domestic non-chain brands also have 1 point before check-in. Actually, I think I should give a good price rating. First of all, I think the size of the room is OK, not crowded, and the equipment and facilities are very complete. The facilities are also very easy to use and no defects are found. Sleeping well all night. The breakfast the next morning, I think it should be praised, whether it is the variety. Or the service of the restaurant makes people feel like a spring breeze. Finally, I want to say two small flaws. First of all, the glass in the shower room is too dirty and has been covered with pulp. A little point is deducted here. Secondly, the cold dish cold mixing area of the breakfast room. There are some cold dishes. Unable to clamp, it means that the ice may be too long. The above two small suggestions are that the hotel can improve immediately at low cost. Finally, I want to say a little extra topic. I understand the hotel very much. Need to be praised on a third-party platform. But I personally don't accept it. The active invitation-style way to give praise. It is even more unacceptable to let customers comment according to the wishes of the hotel in a rewarding way. Of course, this is my pure personal feeling. The overall flaw of the hotel is not concealed, it is still recommended to stay, especially in the Josi area. Is a good choice.FromUS$43
