GGuest UserWe stayed twice at the Riccarton Inn. It's traditional with a pub up front and rooms at the back. Very clean and the staff was helpful and friendly. This is not a hotel chain but an individual inn. The rooms are not new, nor full of modern amenities as some would require. The mattress was creeky. Nevertheless, if you want a truly Scottish experience full of authentic ambiance, you cannot beat Riccarton. We ate breakfast and dinner in the inn and found them delicious. Had to hop on a couple of buses to get there from the airport, but that was part of the fun!
CCharlee CheungEdinburgh is quite hilly and full of stairs, so the journey from the train station was a bit of a trek. The hostel doesn't have a lift, which meant carrying our luggage up and down. Still, it's a good value-for-money option.

AAnonymous UserThe room was really too small, but it was acceptable. But there was no heating at all, it was totally cold and it was unimaginable that it was raining outside and there was no heating in the room. The soundproofing was very poor, I felt like I was sleeping on the street.

HHunnyExploreI stayed at A&O Edinburgh Hostel during my trip to Edinburgh and had a solid experience overall. The location is excellent — right in the city center, within walking distance of the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, and plenty of pubs and restaurants.
The hostel itself is clean, and relaxing after a day of exploring. The staff were helpful and friendly, but it took a while to check-in.
Rooms were basic but comfortable, especially considering the affordable price. Bathrooms were shared but well-maintained.
If you’re a budget traveler looking for a central, convenient place to stay in Edinburgh without fuss, A&O is a good choice. Just be prepared for the usual hostel vibe—shared spaces and some noise.
Would definitely consider staying here again!

MMachenQuiet and clean.
Hill Hotel IBI is much cleaner than Free Inn.
While studying abroad in the UK, I had an obsession with cleanliness, never touching the curtains with my bare hands in hotels, B&Bs, etc. (I am obsessive to the dirty Europeans, but I am normal when you think of the average accommodation that is not cleaned even once from opening to closing).
It was cozy, clean, and there was no smell.
warmth.
In the winter, I shiver even when I wear a t-shirt and a padded vest over it, and even in the middle of summer in July and August, I turn on the electric blanket at night and early in the morning. But it was warm.
Above all, they are friendly and have a nice kitchen.
AAnonymous UserThe staff were nice, the bed and the toilet was clean. However, the bathroom was dirty. The sleeping experience depends on the people in the room.
Mine was bad because people in the room with me was loud even at 11PM. There was a bar on the ground floor. There was also a kitchen for people to use which was nice. Do I recommend this? If you're saving money, yes. But i recommend bringing slippers to be more comfortable and a lock for your bag for safety.
