I saw an incredibly wide city wall, the size of a four-lane road. It is amazing that they built a wall like this. You can also see the bell tower in the distance.

Whenever you climb any ancient city wall it's like a glimpse of ancient time. Especially if you are a fans of Chinese costume drama. This one is a must.

It was our pleasure to have experienced the tour under the guidance of 肖导. She took great care of us and explained each attraction in great detail. Her explanations breathed life into the displays and gave context on what we were looking at. Even after the tour, she helped to coordinate with the driver to ensure that we got back safely to the hotel. Thank you 肖导 for your great service! 😊

Xi'an City Wall

Renting a bike on the Xi'an City Wall takes about four minutes: a deposit, a numbered ticket, and a heavy steel frame that has clearly been dropped before. Then you push it up the ramp and you're on top of a six-hundred-year-old fortification, twelve metres above the street, with the old city on one side and the new one on the other.

The loop is 13.74 kilometres — flat the whole way, and wide enough for two bikes abreast. It takes most people about ninety minutes, which leaves plenty of time to get the timing wrong: arrive at two in the afternoon in July and the ramparts turn into a griddle. The rest comes down to timing and which gate you start at.

History and Dimensions: What the Xi'an City Wall Actually Is

What the Xi'an City Wall Actually Is

What you're walking on is a closed rectangle of rammed earth faced with grey brick, built to defend the Ming city and never seriously tested since. It is one of the largest and best-preserved ancient city walls in China, and unlike most fortifications of its age, the entire circuit is open to the public. You can walk into a gatehouse, climb a ramp, and come out on top of a structure designed to keep armies out — which is a strange and slightly giddy thing to be allowed to do.

The basics at a glance

Built

1370–1378, under the Hongwu Emperor of the Ming dynasty

Length

13.74 km, forming a closed rectangle

Height

12 m

Width

12–14 m across the top, 15–18 m at the base

Defences

98 ramparts, four gatehouses, watchtowers, and a moat

How much of it is actually original

Six hundred years is a long time, but it's worth calibrating. The Terracotta Warriors are closer to 2,200 years old; the wall is a Ming construction, raised when Xi'an was already a former capital rather than a working one. It has been restored repeatedly, and some of the brickwork you see is modern replacement rather than original masonry. The line of the wall and most of its mass, though, are genuine.

That's the trade-off at a site this old. Without restoration it wouldn't be safe to walk; with it, some of the surface is newer than the story. Knowing which is which doesn't spoil anything — it just makes the thing more interesting to look at.

Walk long enough and you start noticing the joins: stretches that are crisp and uniform next to stretches that are pitted and visibly older. That mix is the honest record of a working monument rather than a museum piece. It's also the reason the wall is still here at all — it has been repaired down the centuries because it kept being used.

Xi'an City Wall Tickets, Hours, and What's Included

Xi'an City Wall Tickets, Hours, and What's Included

Entry is cheap by any standard, and the ticket covers the wall itself. Everything else — bikes, drinks, the little museums in the gatehouses — is extra.

What you'll pay

Adult

¥54 (roughly CAD 10)

Student

¥27, with a valid student ID

Children and seniors

Free or reduced; some categories may be limited to Chinese nationals

Hours by gate

The South Gate keeps the longest hours, generally 8:00 am to 10:00 pm. Bike rental runs until about 9:00 pm, with returns accepted until 10:00. The other three gates close earlier, often between 6:00 and 8:00 pm, so if you're starting late, start in the south.

Hours shift with the season and with holidays, so check on the day rather than trusting a guidebook — including this one. Buying a ticket online in advance saves queueing, and you'll need your passport either way.

Xi'an City Wall: Gates, Entrances, and Which One to Use

Xi'an City Wall: Gates, Entrances, and Which One to Use

There are four ways onto the wall, one for each side of the rectangle. Which one you pick shapes the whole visit, and the difference between them is bigger than you'd expect.

Notes

Yongning

South

The grandest and busiest; metro Line 2 stops here

Changle

East

Quieter, with a shorter ticket queue

West

Handy if you're staying in the western old town

Anyuan

North

Closest to Xi'an Railway Station

Start at the South Gate

For a first visit, Yongningmen is the obvious choice, and not just because it's famous. It's the most complete of the four: the full sequence of barbican, arrow tower, and gatehouse still stands, which tells you more about how these defences worked than any placard will. It also has the largest bike rental station on the wall.

Getting there is simple. Metro Line 2 stops at Yongningmen, and from exits A1 or D1 it's about a four-minute walk north to the gate. If you're staying near the railway station, the North Gate will save you a trip across town — but you'll be starting at the least interesting corner and missing the best-preserved defences.

Cycling the Xi'an City Wall

Cycling the Xi'an City Wall

Cycling is what most people come for, and it's the best use of an afternoon up here. The wall is flat, the surface is brick, and there's no traffic to think about.

What a bike costs

Single bike

¥45 for three hours, plus a ¥100 refundable deposit

Tandem

¥90 for three hours, plus a ¥100 deposit

Overtime

About ¥5 per 10 minutes on a single, ¥10 on a tandem

Where to rent

Nine stations along the wall, the largest at the South Gate

What the ride is actually like

A full loop is 13.74 kilometres and takes most people 90 minutes to two hours at a relaxed pace. Stop at every gate for photos and you're closer to two and a half. The brick is uneven in patches — not dangerous, but enough that you'll want both hands on the bars rather than one on your phone.

Nobody warns you about the wind. The top of the wall is completely exposed, and on a breezy day it will push you sideways along the northern and western stretches. It's not a reason to skip the ride, but it is a reason to bring a layer you can zip up without stopping.

The ride has a shape worth knowing. The southern stretch, looking down into the old city, is the most rewarding and the busiest. The western side is quieter and gives you the best view of the moat. The north, facing the railway station and a lot of 1970s concrete, is the least scenic — treat it as transit and keep pedalling. Most riders finish back where they started, which is the point.

If you'd rather walk

Walking the full circuit takes three to four hours, which is pleasant in October and punishing in July. You don't have to commit to the whole thing. The stretch from the South Gate to the West Gate is about 3.4 kilometres — one side of the rectangle — and gives you the best views without the marathon.

What's Worth Getting Off the Bike For

What's Worth Getting Off the Bike For

The wall is the attraction, but a few things on and around it justify stopping. Otherwise you'll ride 14 kilometres and remember it as a blur of grey brick.

The South Gate complex

Yongningmen is the only gate where the full defensive sequence survives: an outer barbican, an arrow tower, and the main gatehouse, arranged so that anyone who forced the first gate found themselves penned in a courtyard with nowhere to go. It's also where the ceremonial buildings are, and where the evening lighting is at its most theatrical. Come back through it after dark if you can.

The view, in both directions

The real reason to climb up is the contrast. Inside the rectangle, building heights are capped, so the rooflines stay low and grey and the Bell Tower sits in the middle of it all. Outside, the towers start immediately. Sunset is when the two halves look least like each other, which is the photograph everyone takes and the one worth taking.

The park at the base

A landscaped park runs along the moat for most of the circuit, and it's free. Walking a stretch at ground level changes your sense of the scale — from up top the wall is a road; from below it's a cliff. The moat is dry in places and green in others, depending on the season and the rainfall.

This is worth an hour on a separate day rather than tacked onto the same one. It's also where the wall stops being a tourist attraction and goes back to being a piece of city infrastructure: tai chi at dawn, kites in the afternoon, and a lot of organised group dancing in the early evening.

Located in central China and at 400 meters (1,300 feet) above sea level, Xi'an is known for its cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. There are four distinct seasons, with the coldest months being December and January (average high temperature: 5 °C / 41 °F) and the hottest months are June and July (average high temperature: 32 °C / 90 °F). There is a rainy season with frequent showers from July to September. The most pleasant seasons are Spring (March to May) and Fall (mid-September to early November). The cool breezes, mild temperature, and sunny days are most suitable for outdoor activities. As many people only visit Xi’an to see the Terracotta Army, it is worth noting the best time to view the site, not in terms of weather (indoor venues) but more for the crowd. If possible, avoid visiting on weekends and holidays, and get there early (8:30 am opening time) or go in the late afternoon when most tour groups have left.Other peak times for Xi’an, on the whole, are national holiday periods when millions of domestic tourists tend to descend on the city. To avoid extreme crowds, pick your dates carefully. Major Chinese holidays are the Chinese Spring Festival (late-January or early-February), Labor Day (beginning of May), National Holiday (first week of October), and Student Summer Holiday (July to August).

Time of day

Late afternoon is the sweet spot. The heat drops, the light turns gold, and you finish the loop just as the gates come on. Early morning is the other good window: the wall opens at 8:00, and for the first hour you'll find long stretches with nobody on them at all.

Avoid midday in summer. There is almost no shade on the ramparts, and the brick throws heat back at you from below as well as above. Winter is cold but clear, and you'll have the place largely to yourself — bring gloves, because the wind up there has nothing to stop it.

In winter the calculation changes again. Sunset lands just after 5:30 pm in December, so a late-afternoon ride means finishing in the dark with the lights on. That's not a drawback. It's arguably the best version of the wall there is.

Practical Notes for Your Xi'an City Wall Experience

Practical Notes for Your Xi'an City Wall Trip

Most of what goes wrong up here is small and avoidable: running out of water, mistiming the bike return, or arriving at the South Gate at four in the afternoon on a Saturday in October. None of it takes much effort to head off.

Before you go

  • Bring water — the stands on the wall charge a premium for it
  • Wear closed shoes; the brick surface is uneven in places
  • Take a hat and sunscreen, because shade is scarce up top
  • Keep some cash or a working payment app for the bike deposit
  • Start at the South Gate unless you're staying in the north

Final Thought

Few major sights anywhere ask so little of you and give back so much. No guide is required, nothing is timed, and the whole experience is a loop you can ride in ninety minutes and then talk about for years. Go late, go slowly, and get off at the gates. The wall has been standing for six centuries; it will keep for another afternoon while you stop for a photograph.

This hotel is located right next to Xi'an's Bell Tower, in a very bustling area. Places like Chang'an Grand Bazaar and Eight Hundred Li Qin Chuan are just downstairs, making dining incredibly convenient and lively. Personally, I found it very convenient, and it's also close to the subway entrance. Service: I thought the service was very warm. I asked if they had well-done fried eggs, and the lady making eggs in the breakfast restaurant specially made two well-done eggs for me. Hygiene: Good, though there was still a slight smell of renovation in the room. However, as long as the window was open, the smell disappeared.

I had a particularly satisfying stay this time! The hotel's location is excellent, making it very convenient for dining out and getting around. The front desk staff were friendly and efficient with the check-in process. The room was spotless, the bathroom had a great wet/dry separation with no odors, and the bedding was soft and clean. The soundproofing was fantastic; I couldn't hear any hallway noise at all at night. All the facilities were complete and working well, the air conditioning was quiet, and toiletries were fully stocked. The cleaning staff were thorough, and any requests were promptly handled. It's really great value for money, my top choice for business trips or vacations, and I've already recommended it to friends!

First off, the location is excellent; it's right next to Xiangzi Temple, and there's a delicious kebab place downstairs. The hotel staff are very friendly, the lobby decor is beautiful, and the rooms are new with comfortable bedding. The minibar is complimentary, which is a nice touch. My only minor complaint is that you have to pay to watch TV, though you can cast your own content. The breakfast is a definite highlight. It's served on the rooftop terrace with a great view of the city walls, making for a very pleasant experience. Plus, it's a good mix of Western and Chinese options with plenty of variety.

Booked this place with friends for our trip, and it totally exceeded our expectations! As soon as we walked in, we were pleasantly surprised. The room was much more spacious than we anticipated. Even with three beds, it didn't feel cramped at all. The bedding was soft and clean, with no musty or strange smells, so we slept incredibly well. The little details in the room were also very thoughtful. The small round table and chairs by the window were perfect for holding our things and chatting. The bathroom was spotless – the sink and toilet were sparkling, and I didn't see any stains even in the corners. It felt really reassuring to use. The front desk staff were also very kind and patient. Overall, our stay was super comfortable, and it's excellent value for money. It was a pleasant stay with the very reasonable price with breakfast provided. But what it shocked us was the room we requested is FULLY NON SMOKING ROOM and the signage display a non smoking room level, you still can smell heavy cigarettes on the floor, even you can spot the cigarette smoke under the light clearly. I think the hotel caters the group tours and the local guests were arranged on the same floor and they open their doors and fully, chi-chatting to next door loudly and smoking in the same time with fully ignoring the signage warning. This is the only unpleasant way with our experience on staying 2 nights here. Oh ya, by the way the hotel should limit the tour agent on hard selling their local package tour to the guests too repetitive. We have arranged our tour and told them all were booked in advanced, but their hard sell attitude has annoyed us many times while entering or exiting the hotel. The breakfast is nice.

Lovely hotel, we had a huge room with 2 TVs and probably one of my favourite showers out of hundreds of hotels. The breakfast was great, staff very friendly and great location right at the heart of Xian and only 30-40min by Didi from XianBei (North Station). The exterior of the hotel didn't do it justice, but once you are in the lobby everything is taken care of. Drum and Bell towers are both easily walkable 10-15min stroll through restaurant streets and make a lovely sunset visit (open till 9pm) and wandering around the exciting if slightly chaotic street food vendors of the Muslim Quarter just next to the towers are well exploring. Get some Biang Biang or a Xian traditional Chinese Burger. The Metro is also about 10-15 mins walk roughly near the drum tower which can take you to Huaqing Palace in about 50mins North East of the city (1 simple line change) I suggest you get entry tickets and shuttle for both palace and Terracotta Warriors (+10 mins shuttle from Huaqing Palace).

The location is close to Chang乐 Gate and Yongxingfang, but you'll need to bike or take a ride-share to the subway. We mostly used taxis to get around. The decor is a bit dated, but the lobby has a distinct Shaanxi character, and the lighting and other details create a nice ambiance. The in-room amenities are complete but also quite old; they really should consider replacing things like the hair dryer. Breakfast was decent, with good roujiamo (meat burger), youpo lazi (oil-splashed chili sauce), and shepherd's purse wontons. The children enjoyed the zenggao (steamed glutinous rice cake) and black rice porridge, though the salad bar was a bit limited. The service was good. The front desk was excellent, and the service for the hot water basin beef in the restaurant was great. The lady making roujiamo was enthusiastic, and the housekeeping staff even replenished my bath bags when they noticed I like to take baths. The service really made up for the outdated facilities.

Honestly, this hotel completely exceeded my expectations. I had seen very negative reviews about it on Xiaohongshu, mainly saying it was too old, and Ctrip also listed it as a 2012 hotel. However, my actual stay found it quite new, and none of those mentioned flaws were present. I initially booked it just for its convenient location, expecting a 150-yuan experience for a 1500-yuan price. Yet, the overall actual feeling was comparable to the Seven Oceans Hotel in Xiamen. The room had a bidet, a large bed, welcome fruit, and they even offered a complimentary breakfast for my child. The front desk staff was incredibly warm and welcoming. In short, all the negative reviews on Xiaohongshu were completely unfounded; it was far beyond what I expected. For over thirty years, I've passed by, stopped, and observed this place countless times. After much hesitation, I finally took advantage of a weekend getaway to experience and connect with it. From the opening of Chang'an Castle Hotel, its continuation as Grand Regal Castle Hotel, to its re-launch as Grand Barony Castle Hotel – a landmark in Xi'an's historical and cultural development, a living chronicle of ancient city culture – it finally unfolded before my eyes. A hotel isn't just a place for travelers to rest; it's also a venue for sharing its inherent spirit with all visitors. Witnessing its timeless classic decor, the aged wooden furniture, its steadfast resistance to modern fast-paced trends, and the inherent tranquility and elegance etched into its very being, it gradually reveals the inclusiveness and understanding of Eastern aesthetics to visitors from around the world. Facing the Yongning Gate city wall, overlooking the square below, countless tourists moving in and out before your eyes, you can't help but feel a connection to the lives of people a thousand years ago. Love love love this hotel!!! I stayed with my friend in a 2 bed 2 bath room for 8 nights and it was extremely spacious and comfortable. The rooms were very clean and the beds super super super comfy ( I could sleep it in all day but my itinerary was super full). The photos online are quite true to the actual room. They had extremely good service too, starting from the airport pickup, where they were on time and the car was spacious and luxurious! We did the 5 seater sedan at RMB100, the price is comparable to a didi premium but the difference is that they would track your flight and made sure to you were taken care of. The hotel even had Butler service and was very attentive, I could even get them to help store my friend's birthday cake sent from the local cake shop and send it up to us when we were back. The laundry service was handy for a long stay, it was easy to use (and we were on the same floor so it felt like home to just go to and from our room to the laundry room). This hotel is our top choice for family vacations with kids; I highly recommend booking a room in the Imperial Tower! The Imperial Tower's elevator goes directly to the hot springs and swimming pool, so you don't have to walk far. It's super convenient for kids to enjoy the hot springs and swimming, saving you the hassle of walking back and forth, and it's very kid-friendly. The hotel has a traditional Chinese garden setting, which is quiet and comfortable, and the room hygiene is well-maintained. The location is excellent; it's right next to an outlet mall, so you can easily go shopping in your free time. Transportation is also convenient, making it perfect for a short trip from Xi'an. The buffet dinner tastes good and offers a wide variety, so both adults and children can find something they love. The only downside is that the menu updates are infrequent; if you stay multiple times, the dishes feel similar, lacking a sense of novelty. The bell tower The drum tower/The Xi’an Circumvallation Xi'an|0.62km from city centre
Unfortunately i didn't take many pictures but recorded videos. I booked a room type as shown in the first but received something smaller as the one in the second pic, weirdly cut. I didn't notice it as first as i was distracted by the strong smoke smell and asked the lady to change, who tried to sell me a qin shi huang mausoleum tour. Then i was brought to a room type as the one in the first pic, that's when i realised that's what i initially had booked... but there was still a smoke smell and as i really had to use the toilet i simply thought of using the A/C and opening the window, hoping it'd get better. By the evening i got startled by someone knocking at the door only to realise it was someone knocking on my neighbouring door. That's when i realised there was a 1-2cm gap between the floor and door and why i heard that loud knock. I also noticed neighbouring doors were fine and even asked the neighbouring guests if they could hear me. Anyway; that's when i demanded for a second change and only then, when i was a bit assertive and insisting on a new room, did i get a proper room. But there was small issue with the 3rd room too, with the drainage as the water took around 5mins to flow away, making noise. But that wasn't an big issue. It seems like this hotel seems to follow the procedure to give problematic rooms to customers who seem easy-going, which is a known tactic to chinese people from china but not so to foreigners. Beside of that, my stay was pleasant, the breakfast was rich and they have a big variety. I just think it was a bit of a waste of time trying to sell those tobacco smell rooms to me. You can easily fix those by endorsing proper no smoking rules or use a filter machine before, removing smoke. Beside of the convenience as it's really close to all main attractions i just find those actions subpar. Which is an issue with whoever decides to implement such strategies.

Dayan Pagoda/The Grand Tang Mall Xi'an|7.91km from city centre
My stay at the W Hotel Xi'an was excellent. Although the hotel opened around 2014 and has been around for some years, the facilities are incredibly well-maintained. The design is vibrant, with a trendy cyberpunk style that cleverly merges with Xi'an's rich ancient history, bringing new life to the millennium-old city. The luxury isn't overt; it's hidden in every meticulous detail. We booked a lake-view room, and the balcony view was stunning. Stepping out onto the balcony, you could overlook Qujiangchi Park, with the beautiful lake scenery stretching before you. The room offered a variety of pillows; the buckwheat and anti-snore pillows were very comfortable, and the bedding was soft, ensuring a great night's sleep. The hotel corridors and elevators also feature unique elements, perfect for taking photos. A special thank you goes to Vera from Guest Relations for her thoughtful arrangements throughout our stay. She provided complimentary sightseeing bus tickets and a travel photography service. Our room also had welcome fruits and cocktails. The staff were friendly and responsive. The breakfast selection was extensive, offering both Western dishes and authentic local Shaanxi snacks, all of which tasted great. I highly recommend choosing this hotel for your trip to Xi'an.

High-tech Zone Xi'an|5.38km from city centre
During the National Day holiday, we decided to make a spontaneous trip to Xi'an. We chose Shangri-La because my family had a wonderful experience at the Guangzhou Shangri-La previously. Plus, the Xi'an Shangri-La has a great location, not far from the subway station, with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. While it's not directly next to tourist attractions, the advantage is that it's quiet and not noisy. Upon check-in, the front desk upgraded us to a garden-view room, which wasn't on the main road side and had an unobstructed view. The room was very spacious, and even though the hotel has been open for many years, the facilities are still well-maintained and very clean. Breakfast was extensive, with many local Shaanxi specialties; the 'roujiamo' (Chinese hamburger) and meatball soup were delicious. Overall, the hotel environment is excellent, and the service is very attentive. We will definitely choose to stay here again on our next visit to Xi'an.

The hotel's location is excellent, just a few minutes' walk to the Huaqing Pool scenic area. Although the rooms were renovated a while ago, they are incredibly well-maintained and still look brand new. The hot springs are also fantastic, with both outdoor and indoor private baths being superb. The room facilities are good too; this family room exceeded our expectations. We accidentally left a towel when checking out, and Ms. Gao Yi at the front desk specifically called to inform us and arranged for it to be couriered back. Many thanks, highly recommend! 👍

Traveling with my family, I compared several hotels before settling on this one, and I'm so glad I made the right choice after checking in. The hotel boasts a serene and elegant environment, tucked away from the bustling city noise, yet within walking distance to many attractions. The surrounding area is well-equipped with restaurants and convenience stores, making both travel and daily life incredibly convenient. The rooms are spacious and airy with excellent natural light, and the cleanliness standards are strict – every corner is spotless. The mattresses are soft and comfortable, and the soundproofing is outstanding. The hotel service is incredibly heartwarming; Front Desk staffer Xiao Dang (Xiaodang) was very friendly and provided a detailed and helpful check-in. The hotel's common areas are beautifully maintained, perfect for a relaxing stroll during downtime. The parking area is well-organized, making parking very convenient. Our entire stay had a warm and comfortable atmosphere, offering both the professional service of a hotel and the relaxed feel of home. The price matched the experience perfectly, and my whole family felt comfortable and at ease. It's truly ideal for family trips, and I'll definitely choose to stay here again on our next visit.

The room was exceptionally clean, the service was warm and attentive with great attention to detail, and the hot springs were simply amazing! So relaxing and great for the skin after a soak. Hotel guests have exclusive access directly into the Huaqing Palace, making it such a pleasant experience to enjoy the scenic spots early in the morning when there are fewer crowds. Don't miss the evening live-action dance drama 'The Song of Everlasting Sorrow'. The breakfast was fantastic, offering a full range of Shaanxi local delicacies alongside fresh fruits and vegetables. Dinner was also superb; the crispy yet tender gourd chicken (Hulu Ji) was a highlight, and the glutinous yellow rice cake was an absolute favorite. Since we were exhausted from our travels, we thoughtfully packed it to eat in the room. The room also came with complimentary little gifts and a soothing bedtime soup. Five-star recommendation, we will definitely be back!

My stay at the Haoting Hotel far exceeded my expectations! The room was spotless, the bedding comfortable, and the overall environment was quiet and serene. It's very close to Northwestern Polytechnical University's Chang'an Campus, making it super convenient for getting around and finding places to eat. What truly impressed me was discovering I'd left something behind in the room after checking out. I was already too far away to turn back, but the front desk staff diligently helped me locate the item, proactively assisted with packing it up, and patiently coordinated with the logistics company throughout the process. Their service was genuinely warm and thoughtful, and their attention to detail truly shined. This is definitely a hidden gem of a hotel, highly recommended for anyone studying or on business trips near Northwestern Polytechnical University!
