What Are Vietnam’s Newest Entry Declaration Documents?

Vietnam now uses two separate mandatory entry declarations (not a replacement for your visa):
- Digital Pre-Arrival Card (New 2026): Mandatory online declaration for travelers landing at Tan Son Nhat (SGN, Ho Chi Minh City); generates a QR code to speed up immigration.
- NA1 Form: Traditional entry/exit declaration (replaced old M3 Form); only required for Visa on Arrival (VOA) users and land/sea arrivals.
Key Clarification for Canadians
- e-Visa holders: Do NOT need the NA1 Form
- Visa-exempt & e-Visa travelers (SGN only): Must complete the Digital Pre-Arrival Card
- VOA travelers (all airports): Must complete both Digital Pre-Arrival Card (SGN only) + NA1 Form
- All documents are 100% free and available in English.
🚨 Newest Vietnam Entry Official Update (Effective April 15, 2026)

- Mandatory Digital Pre-Arrival Card: For ALL foreign nationals arriving at SGN Airport
- Current applicable airports: SGN (mandatory); Hanoi (HAN) & Da Nang (DAD) coming soon
- Official portal: prearrival.immigration.gov.vn
- Submission window: Within 72 hours before arrival (no earlier, no later)
- Output: QR code sent to your email

Vietnam Entry Basics for Canadians
For Canadian passport holders planning to visit Vietnam, you’ll need two core items to enter Vietnam:
- Valid visa (or visa exemption)
- Required entry declaration(s) (Digital Pre-Arrival Card / NA1 Form, based on your port & visa)
Visa Options for Canadians
All three visa pathways for Canadians require completing Vietnam Entry Declarations. Here’s a concise breakdown:
- Visa Exempt (Rare): Vietnamese-Canadians + immediate family; direct Phu Quoc Island arrivals
- e-Visa (Most Popular): Apply online 3+ business days in advance; no NA1 needed; SGN arrivals need Digital Pre-Arrival Card
- Visa on Arrival (VOA): Get approval letter online first; pay stamping fee at airport; needs NA1 Form + SGN arrivals need Digital Pre-Arrival Card

Where to Access the Vietnam Arrival Card

Canadian travelers have three convenient ways to get the Vietnam Arrival Card, depending on preference and timing:
- Online (Most Recommended): Free via official portals (linked earlier), 1–7 days before trip (see Section 38 for timing). No official download—save confirmation as PDF/screenshot.
- On the Plane: Paper forms available on international flights (including from Canadian cities). Ask flight attendants for an English form; fill out during the flight as a backup.
- At the Airport: Tablets (Wi-Fi) or paper forms available at major airports (Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City). Note: Adds 30+ minutes to wait time, so plan ahead.
When to Submit What Documents?
Digital Pre-Arrival Card (SGN Only)
- Best: 24–72 hours before arrival
- Hard rule: No earlier than 72 hours before arrival (system rejects early submissions)
- Minimum: Complete before boarding (airport kiosks add 20–40 minutes wait)
NA1 Form (VOA & Land/Sea Only)
- Submit 1–7 days before arrival
- Best: 2–3 days before departure from Canada
- Expires after 7 days (early submissions must be redone)

|---|---|---|
Personal Info | Full name (passport exact), DOB, gender, nationality | No nicknames/abbreviations |

What Happens After You Submit Your Vietnam Arrival Card?

After submitting your Vietnam Arrival Card (digital confirmation or paper form) along with your Canadian passport and visa (if required), here’s what to expect during the immigration process.
Step 1: Immigration Inspection
The immigration officer will scan your passport and Vietnam Arrival Card details to verify your information. This process usually takes 5–10 minutes, but it can be longer during peak travel times (e.g., Vietnamese holidays or Canadian winter break). The officer may ask you a few simple questions—don’t worry, they’re usually straightforward:
- “How long will you be staying in Vietnam?”
- “Where are you staying in Vietnam?” (Have your hotel address ready if they ask.)
- “What is the purpose of your trip?” (Tourism, business, visiting family—just be honest.)
Step 2: Passport Stamping
Once your information is verified, the officer will stamp your passport with your entry date and allowed stay duration. Double-check the stamp to make sure the dates are correct—if there’s a mistake, ask the officer to correct it immediately.
Step 3: Next Steps
- If you have an e-visa: You’re all set! Head straight to baggage claim to pick up your luggage.
- If you have a visa-on-arrival: After passport stamping, go to the “Visa on Arrival Counter” to pay the ~25 USD stamping fee (cash only, USD preferred) and get your visa sticker. Then proceed to baggage claim.
Pro Tip: Keep your Vietnam Arrival Card confirmation (digital or paper) with you during your trip—you may need it when exiting Vietnam (though immigration usually only asks for your passport on departure).
Common Mistakes to Avoid on the Vietnam Arrival Card

To answer the question: What mistakes should you avoid when arriving in Vietnam?, let’s focus on the most common errors Canadian travelers make when filling out the Vietnam Arrival Card:
- Wrong document mix-up: e-Visa holders: Do NOT fill NA1 Form; SGN arrivals: Don’t skip Digital Pre-Arrival Card
- Submitting too early: Digital Pre-Arrival Card: Submissions over 72 hours early are rejected
- Cash declaration error: Declare cash over 10,000 USD (not 5,000 USD)
- Typos on passport info: Name, passport number, dates must match exactly
- Losing QR code/confirmation: Save offline + email backup + print a copy
This guide covers all current rules for Canadian travelers flying into Vietnam. Follow the timing and document rules for your arrival airport and visa type, and you’ll enjoy a fast, smooth entry. Safe travels!

The location is good, the room is very clean. The service is good too. I am happy with all of this.
What made me unhappy and inconvenient, the reasons I gave two stars for amenties are as follows:
1) toilet - clean yes, but the water pump is top strong and inconvenient to press, feel like I am pressing a broken handle water pump.
2) trash bin - in the toilet, it is difficult to push down the cover, too strong, so always ended up touching my hand with the cover where most of the trashed from the toilet were in contact with while pushing down. In the room, the cover, always need to use hands to remove the cover.
3) Electricity plug sockets - should have at least two free, one each by each bed. But what we had to use is the one for TV plug, the one for night light bulb (between the bed). Only one free socket by the mirror in the bedroom. So very inconvenience for two persons to charge our phones or laptops.FromRUB 6,412

The hotel's location is a bit far from the city center, which was especially inconvenient for getting taxis during the Spring Festival. Pros: amazingly delicious buffet breakfast from western to asian cuisines. Delicious food and always fresh seasonal fruits. Menu changes daily. Their Triple Roomnis quiet spacious with bonggavillas on window sills. Room is cleaned and linens changed on a daily basis. Bar at the rooftop with jacuzzis and spa pool which added to the zen vibes. Lobby is dimly lighted but just enough to light the way which I think uphholds to its ZEN vibes. The location is superb. Next to it are spas for hair, nails, massage and 3 mins walk right through ben thanh market, saigon square, saigon center. 10 mins walk to Notre Dame Cathedral. Easy to catch Grab. Staff are all very friendly, helpful and communicates in English well.
Cons: they don't have a swimming pool as what is advertised on its amenities. It's more like a spa pool where clients can sit, dip and maybe drink some coctails while watching the night lights and relaxing with the zen environment. However, the spa pool is perfect for my 8 yo nephew. He can play, swim on the pool without us worrying that the water might be deep for him. Bath tub is high so its not good for a short elderly client who got issues with mobility. My 78 yo mom got a hard time climbing in and out of the tub as its also slippery. We finally managed by letting her sit on th edge of the tub first before putting her foot in/out of the tub and putting towel on the floor of the tub while she's showering.FromRUB 3,048

An absolutely amazing experience, I will definitely stay here again next time I visit Vietnam:
Check-in (Top-notch): We were offered welcome snacks and drinks upon arrival, which was a lovely and unique touch.
Room (Excellent): The room left a fantastic impression on me. The high ceilings made it feel incredibly spacious, and the solid wood flooring was very comfortable underfoot. Coupled with the genuine oil painting above the bed, the entire room exuded a sense of quality and sophistication—this is truly the kind of experience one expects from an established five-star hotel. The room also had a balcony overlooking the pool, which was warm and inviting with natural sunlight during the day. The air conditioner's outdoor unit was on the balcony, and while it made some noise at night, it wasn't overly disruptive.
Breakfast (Excellent): Not only was there a wide variety, but the dishes also rotated. I had breakfast three times, and each time there were slight variations in the offerings, a level of thoughtfulness that is truly rare. Additionally, there were freshly prepared pho, omelets, and sandwiches. The chef could even customize omelets according to individual preferences, a service I've rarely encountered despite traveling to so many places.
Service (Outstanding): Whether it was the doorman, the front desk staff, or the housekeeping team who cleaned our room daily, everyone was incredibly enthusiastic. Every evening during turn-down service, in addition to biscuits, a local short story was provided, which was a very thoughtful touch. In fact, the attention to service details can already be inferred from my previous descriptions; I'm giving it an 'outstanding' rating here.
Location (Top-notch): The location is very central, with most attractions within a 30-minute walk. The only minor inconvenience was the lack of traffic lights at the intersection, which made crossing the street a bit tricky when there was heavy traffic.

This is a hotel of contradictions.
The facade is impressive. It's centrally located in District 1 near restaurants, shops and the Western quarter. The buffet breakfast selection is pleasing. The room size is generous. Staff are friendly and helpful. There's a forward thinking eco-friendly policy which clearly implemented throughout the hotel.
However, the hotel is let down by some of its facilities. For example, in the bathroom a spa has been placed under a shower head so that when you shower the water runs down the wall and floods across the bathroom floor from one side to the other and in front of the hand basin. The hot and cold water taps turn on in opposite directions and the cold tap is not fitted properly which causes it to move. My children were unable to turn the shower on or off without adult help. The shower head is also too low and my 6 foot husband had to crouch down to shower.
Another problem area is the rooftop pool area. The clear rooptop pool perimeter fence is woefully too low. I watched a child climb out of the pool to the ledge between the pool and the perimeter fence and I was very worried for his safety. One wrong slip or stumble and there's nothing stopping the child from toppling over the edge and 11 floors down.
This hotel has a lot going for it but also has further room for improvement.FromRUB 3,971

The hotel itself is in a great location, with excellent cleanliness, facilities, and service. It's perfect for business travelers. Over 90% of the hotel's residents are Japanese.

This place is hard to find even to some locals, and its especially hard for foreigners to come by for the first time. It's a newly building with security at the lobby, and there are shops and restaurants near by which is convenient. However; there is hardly a management of this property, we booked for 4days 3 nights and there were only 4 bottles in total and we had no respond when we required for more water bottles.(good thing is shops are close by.) Secondly, we also had no respond when we requied of house cleaning, we found and killed Cockroaches everyday. Last but not least, the third night of stay hot water running out, I had to take a cold shower. I don't mind taking cold showers in Vietnam's current weather, its just i didnt have an option of hot water makes this stay less worthy.
There are also some pros of this property, the views are good, you get to see the landmark 81 building right outside the window, and some parts of river view. Besides the views, they use good quality bedding appliances (mattresses are great) and electrical appliances(dryer in your closet, you get to hang your wet clothes, sanitize and dry them).
Overall, I would come back and live here if the management can starting to catch up.FromRUB 9,876

We wanted a hotel in district 1, close to the major Sightseeingspots and having a pool. This was it. We definitely would recommend it and would choose it again. The pool on the roof top was awesome. And the cocktails served delicious.

We loved our stay at the hotel! The staff was great and helpfull, the breakfast was very nice with multiple options including an egg station and fresh juices. There is a pool, but we did not use it. The location is also great, it is walking distance to multiple sightseeing areas and a mall. We would stay here again when we come back to Ho Chi Minh!FromRUB 4,972

My third time at this hotel. Very convenient because of the location, the reception staff are very pleasant and happy to help you. The breakfast is very boring. Cheap ingredients. And the room is too small for the number of guests even though they added a room. Going down the stairs is not the most convenient. And the service lacks character, the cook does a great job and always fills in what is missing. You can see that he is professional and experienced. And he is also very friendly. But we took sandwiches for the long train ride and I must say that this was the biggest disappointment. Because I did not take a sandwich down to the kitchen for myself, because to get a sandwich from the dining room I am supposed to pay extra. Although only a few dollars, the principle is completely stupid. The sandwich I received was terrible, dry, boring, made from two slices of cheap bread, a kind of cheese leaf and a hard-boiled egg. Something really inedible. Bread that chokes you. I prefer nothing to this free nothing.FromRUB 2,373

Is very 5 star hotel and service is very high class. The room is also very clean. However, the room is abit squeezy but overall is good experience. One night SGD 160 is quite reasonable. The concierge team is very experience and friendly in helping us find a 24 hour clinic. The view at floor 25 is really good. They have an infinity pool at the rooftop which can see the whole of HCMC cityview.FromRUB 7,627

We booked a Signature River View room. The room was well-equipped, though not quite as good as an Atour Hotel in China, but the service was truly excellent! Booking this room type gave us complimentary access to the Executive Lounge on the 23rd floor. From 3 PM to 5 PM, there's free food and drinks there – their cashews are particularly delicious! From 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, they have cocktails (but we didn't go, haha). There's free laundry service daily and chocolates left for you at night. The service really is top-notch! The hotel breakfast is more Western-style but very extensive, and we all loved it. The hotel's location is unbeatable – within walking distance of The Cafe Apartment, City Hall, the Opera House, and the night bus pick-up point. The Fine Arts Museum and Ben Thanh Market also seem to be within walking distance. The Pink Church and Independence Palace are just a short taxi ride away, very close. Downstairs, there are plenty of massage shops and restaurants, and there's also a currency exchange next door, so it's super convenient!FromRUB 5,433

The hotel's location is excellent, very close to the Independence Palace and Ho Chi Minh Central Post Office, both about a 5-minute walk away. There are good restaurant options nearby, and if you want to take a city tour bus, you can catch it right in front of the post office. The hotel ambiance is great, with a vintage yet modern decor. The hotel's cleanliness is also commendable. For breakfast, they offer both Vietnamese local specialties and Western options. All hotel staff can speak English. If you'd like to see the traditional Vietnamese water puppet show, you can turn right out of the hotel and walk straight for about 10 minutes to the Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theater.FromRUB 10,427

An amazing boutique hotel in District 3, just a short 10-min Gtab ride away from the more touristy District 1.
We booked the corner suite to celebrate our anniversary and was glad we did! The moment we entered the room, we were greeted with a beautiful high-ceiling loft studio suite with lots of cosy and homey vibes. Best of all were the full-length windows that gave a very open rustic cabin lodge feel. Just needed a fireplace to complete it.
Loved that it’s not a typical hotel room. Bathroom was just as spacious with a gigantic bath tub for 2!
Only setback as highlighted by many other reviewers was the position of the shower, which causes water to pool near the doorway. A layout issue that would be good to fix.
Ceiling fan was a little glitchy and didn’t work most of the time. But with the strong aircon, there really wasn’t a real need for the fan.
Breakfast spread was great too. Not expansive, but just good with the essential stuff.
On the whole, we loved our stay here - the proximity to tourist spots, fairly quiet surroundings, and clean environment. Though a bit pricier as a boutique hotel, we would not hesitate to be back.FromRUB 7,143

This French-style hotel has all the amenities, including a swimming pool and a mini-gym. The service is also excellent, and the breakfast and afternoon tea are quite substantial. Highly recommend anyone coming to Ho Chi Minh City to stay here! Location is super nice & close to main attractions, staffs are very thoughtful & attentive, room is clean & interior is very unique. The hotel also has a skyroof-like restaurant which serves fusion food and the prices are still affordable for me. They also give out complimentary drinks and afternoon tea time to guest. You can also borrow powerbank, city bikes, and traditional hat for free at the reception. Plus, when I am about to travel back to the airport, they have a special Grab code for the guests of this hotel that gives you 20% off! Very nice experience indeedFromRUB 3,566

We did not have a perfect experience from this stay at Somerset HCM hence no full marks. Apartment - we were allocated a non-ideal ground floor 2 bedroom apartment facing the swimming pool, we requested for a change of room at the point of check in but were denied repeatedly. There was a pool party at the pool with a high noise level. We made a complaint, the reception then offered a room change for the next day but we declined having already unpacked & settled in. There is no pool view as we had to close the curtains throughout the stay for privacy reasons. The TV in the master bedroom was not working at all, we made a request, they repaired the TV after a long time on the second night but it was spoilt again. We gave up & did not made another request. The TV should have been checked that it is in order before allowing guests to check in. Other than these 2 negative points, the apartment was simply great. The kitchen was clean and well equipped with a washing machine, microwave and conventional ovens, crockery & kitchen utensils. The 2 bedrooms and bathrooms were clean and well equipped too. Housekeeping is great, apartment was cleaned and refreshed well daily. Location is fine. It may not be that convenient to shopping, food & places of interest but it is not a problem at all in HCM as it is so easy and affordable to take a Grab to anywhere. For info, we stayed 3 nights and paid higher than average rates for this 2 bedroom apartment.FromRUB 9,876

The hotel is located off a quieter street, within 12mins walking distance to Ben Thanh market. There’s a coffee place right at the entrance of the hotel serving great coffee. 2 bottles of water replenished daily in the room with drip coffee and tea bags available. Toilet works great, no foul smell, no leaks and flush working properly. Room is well air conditioned, we had a good rest here. There’s simple breakfast provided in the restaurant located at level 11. Great location, right on Bui Vien Walking Street. I booked a dorm bed and it was comfortable enough. It's the most convenient option if you're just stopping over for a day. The hotel lobby is spacious, and there's an elevator. Plus, there are several mini-marts and convenience stores just 10-20 meters away. The music on Bui Vien Street can be loud at night, so it's best suited for guests who are used to sleeping in the late hours.FromRUB 866
FAQs about Vietnam Arrival Card
-
Is the Vietnam Arrival Card the same as a Vietnam visa?
No, the Vietnam Arrival Card and a Vietnam visa are two completely separate documents. A visa (or e-visa) grants you permission to enter Vietnam, while the arrival card is an immigration declaration form that all travellers must complete regardless of how they obtained their visa. Think of the visa as your entry permission and the arrival card as a registration form you fill out upon arrival. -
What is a pre-arrival letter for Vietnam?
A pre-arrival letter (also called visa approval letter) is required for Visa on Arrival (VOA) applicants. It's an official document issued by Vietnam Immigration that you apply for online in advance. You must print it and bring it to the airport along with your passport, photos, and stamping fee. -
What happens if I make a mistake on my Vietnam Arrival Card?
If you make a mistake on your Vietnam Arrival Card, request a new form — either from the flight attendant or at the immigration hall — and start fresh. Do not use correction fluid (white-out) on the form, as this can raise questions with immigration officers. Always write in blue or black ballpoint pen, use block capital letters, and double-check all details against your passport before submitting. -
What address should I put on the Vietnam Arrival Card?
You should enter the name and address of the hotel or accommodation where you will be staying on your first night in Vietnam. If you are travelling to multiple cities, the address of your first accommodation is sufficient. Booking your Vietnam hotel in advance through a platform like Trip.com ensures you have a confirmed address ready to complete your arrival card without any delays at immigration. -
What do Canadians need to enter Vietnam?
Canadian passport holders need a valid passport (with at least six months of validity beyond their intended stay), a Vietnamese visa or e-visa (unless a visa exemption applies), and a completed Vietnam Arrival Card. Proof of accommodation and a return or onward ticket may also be requested at immigration. Canadians can apply for a Vietnam e-visa online through the official Vietnam Immigration portal before travelling.
